RUGBY CONTROL. CONDUCT OP OTAGO TEAM. (By Telegraph—Press Associa"on.) Duncdin, August 27. Tho inquiry was concluded by (lie Otago Rugby Union to-night concerning certain oharges made against the Ofcago footballers who visited Invercargill recently. After a lcngtliy discussion it was decided that, as tho ' players absolutely denied complicity in regard to the damage done in tho hotel, and as there was no evidenoo to prove that the damage was dono by members of tho team, tho committee would take no further action. The president expressed the opinion that, if tho whole team were disqualified, the name of the culprit would be divulged in two minutes. In regard (o an allegation that Ixid language was used, the committee decided that no evidence had been adduced to substantiate tho charge. NEW SOUTH WALES V. VICTORIA. Ch'ristchurch, August 27. A special meeting of club delegates, called by the Canterbury Rugby Union, was held to-night to consider the encroachment of League footbo.ll in Christchnrch. The meeting declared its loyalty to tho amateur game, and also threw out a resolution favouring the payment of players for tho time lost. The meeting also adopted a resolution favouring the reinstatement <>f disqualified players who had only participated in League practice games, and also decided to seek permission from the English Union to alter the local rules to improve the game. SHIPPING CO.'s ANNUAL MATCH. At Seatoun Park next Saturday teams representing the Union Company's local staff and the combined shipping companies' offices in tho city will play their annual match for the Shipping Shield. Five matches hnve previously been played the "combined" team winning four and tho Union Company one. The Terawhiti will leave the wharf for Seatoun at 2.15' p.m. on Saturday and will return to town after tho match. In the evening the annual dinner and smoke concert will bo held at the Hotel Windsor. HARRIERS. The Brpoklyn Harriers decided their 7 milo Open, Handicap at Miramar on Saturday. Oiit of an entry of 24, seventeen faced the starter.: R. Harvey (7min. lOsec.) led for the first two miles, but was thendisplaced by Ballantyne, Henderson following five yai'ds away. This order remained unchanged save that tho backmnrkers gradually moved up. At the 4 mile post M. Poynton, S. Murray, B. Harvey, \V. Donaldson, and L. Brown retired from the race. At this stage, .Ballantyno led by ten yards from Henderson, who in. turn was some thirty yards ahead of E. B. Smith. Over the last two miles Ballantyno increased his lead to about 200 yards.
