COLLEGE DEBATING SOCIETY.

CONTEST FOR WOMEN. A somewhat unique contest was held at Victoria College on Saturday evening when the University Debating Society held an oratorical competition for women. Compatitors had to speak for not more than twelve minutes on some woman of note in history. The competitors, with their subject?,' were as follow:—Miss H. Jenkins. M.A.,-spoke on Helen Keller; Miss E. North, on Philippa of Hainault; Miss I Tollev, on Madame de Stael; Mrs. Hickcy, on Hvpatja; and Miss Casey, on Elizabeth Fry.* The competitors dealt with their subjects in varied ways—some looking at the character of the heroine-from the point of view of picturcsqueness; others being strictly biographical in their treatment. The judging was by means of a ballot of the whole audience. As the counting of the- votes took some time, His interim was filled by impromptu speaking on the part of the men of the society. As a result of the ballot, Miss North* was declared the winner of the prize. Mrs. Hickey and Miss Casev bains second and third respectively. Before the close of the'meeting the chairman announced that the subject of the next debate is "That the methods adopted lr suppressing the recent strike in Queensland were such as can and should bt adopted in N"w Zealand under similai circumstances."
