PRESERVATIVES IN BUTTER.
NOTIFICATION OP 'PROHIBITIONS. The attention of the Government having -been'drawn to tho fact that on occasions recently shipments of Australian (and in •ono ease New Zealand) butter to Honolulu have been refused admission by : the : authorities on the ground that tho butter contained boric ; acid or othor preservatives,., tha Agricultural -Department has notified for "general- information that tho Hawaiian Public Health Regulations pro- | hibit the manufacture or sale of food containing any added substance or ingredient which is poisonous. ot injurious to /.health,' ..or any. deleterious substance not a -necessary ingredient in manufacture; .and in "the case of. milk and cream specifically prohibit the nso of any preserva"tivo or antiseptic.. Tho.regulations seem to.be strictly-applied-to butter containing boric acid, and tho'. attention of shippers is.'.drawn to the loss they mo; suffer by the use of this preservative in butter inrendcii for the Hawaiian market. The Department also ■ Notifies- that: the introduction into the 'United ' States of butter containing preservatives of any kind-is prohibited.
