MR. ROOSEVELT DENIES CHARGES
A' COUNTER ATTACK.

Mr. Roosevelt Ims denied iit toto tho that ho received large contributions towards his campaign funds in previous Presidential contests from Mr. Archbold, of tho Standard Oil Company. Ho declares that ho knew nothing of any contribution from (he Standard Oil Company. Mr. Roosevelt atlded that Mr. 'Archbold hud made many appeals to him not to prosecute (ho Standard Oil Company. Ho also insinuated that the relation of Senator Penrose, who laid the charges, with Mr. Archbold, when Senator Penrose was a member of tho Industrial Committee would not boar investigation. Mr. Roosovolt concluded by saying that ho had to thank his assailants for showing the United States that ho was tlio only man tho big interests feared. "A BASE, CONTEMPTIBLE THING." AID FROM TRUSTS REFUSED. New York, August 23. Mr. Roosevelt, in replying at Wilkesbarre, to Senator Penrose's charges, compared tho Senator to a cuttlefish squirting ink when attacked by an enemv. Mr Roosevelt denied flatly all Mr. Pinroso's chaiges. It was, ho said, a base, contemptiblo tiling on Mr. Penrose's "part to repeat slanders on hearsay evidence. Mr. Roosevelt declared tliat during tho 1908 campaign ho sent letters to his campaijjn. committee, forbidding the receipt of any campaign funds from tlio Standard Oil Trust. Senator Dixon lias published a statement regarding tho campaign expenses of tho Progressives, which, lie saws, have not exceeded ,£30,000. Stories of excessive spending of money are, he alleges, untrue.
