SOUTH AFRICA'S PLANS.

Router's Agoncy has interviewed General Bayers, who is; visiting England to discuss a defence scheme for South Africa costing .£500,000. All South Africans, ho declared, realise the responsibility of partially or entirely relieving the British taxpayer of tho burden of defence. The registration of all citizens for military scrvico begins in South Africa in 'January. The coast dofence scheme will bo undisturbed, but the coast defence force will be available for tho Imperial Navy in any part of the Empire. Tho present naval contribution, will be continued. THE IMPERIAL STAFF. (Rec. August 25, 6.5 p.m.) London, August 24. Tho overseas section of the Imperial general Staff now consists of Colonel Robin, of Now Zealand, Colonel Thacker, of Canada, and Colonel Legge, of Australia. It is expected that South Africa, •will shortly send an officer, MR. CHURCHILL DEFENDED. London, August 23. The, "Pall Mall 'Gazetto" strenuously protests against the "Standard's" attaoks on Mr. Churchill, First Lord of . the Admiralty, who was directing tho naval manoeuvres by wireless telegraphy from London, and rebuking tho Admirals. The "Gazette" says:-"Why mislead the country into the belief that Mr. Churchill was responsible for orders issued by Admiral Bridgeman, who lias been entrusted with tho strategical control of the NavyP" THE NEXT WAR. Berlin, August 23. The newspaper "Neuesto Nachrichton," which is the organ of tho great Krnpp Company, advocates joint Austro-Gcrman Manoeuvres, in view of tho next war, which, it declares, would find those fofces opposed to the united armies of Britain, France, and Russia. ;
