Later. Mr. Scott advises that G 3-Bd. f.o.b. for outputs of cheese to the end of April mid May is still' freely otleriuy, but only by a few North Island factories as. yet. BOLD OPERATOR IN CRIME. Auckland, August 23. Edward Simmonds was committed for trial to-day on his own confession for baring issued valueless cheques, and stolen diamond rings, the property of Pascoe, jeweller. Simmonds in Mapr last sent a telephone message to Pascoe s, ordering a number cf diamond rings to bo sent to residence of Mr. Nathan, a prominent citizen. He met the messenger at the gate, representing himself to )» Nathan, took possession of the rings, and then disappeared, (several of the rings were subsequently pawned. Next accused cashed forged cheques for substantial sums and disappeared, it Titnarti, Inter, he was arrested for passing valueless cheques,- and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. lie tlien confessed to the theft of rings and the forgeries st Auckland. CUSTODY OF A CHILD. Dunedin, August 23. Before Mr. Justice Williams to-day a married couple named Lawrence, formerly of Greymouth but now residing in Ho bar t, applied for a writ of habeas corpus to gain custody of their child, now adopted by a family named Gregory, at Greymouth. There is no allegation concerning the treatment of the child, which is well looked after, but it is alleged that no order for adopting it was completed. The mother, having regained her health, desires to obtain custody of tho child. The case is not concluded.
'MATCHES & PIPE IN MINE. Dunedin, August 23. Before Mr. Bartholomew, S.M., at Kaitangata yesterday, two miners named Walters and • Varcoe were charged with unlawfully having in their possesio/n lucifer matches and a tobacco pipe in a certain part of the Kaitangata mine, where safety lamps are required to be used. Waiters was convicted and fined' £o and £i IBs. costs.
AN OLD WEST COASTER. Greymouth, August 22. Mr. Thomas Scott Cairney, an old resident of the West 'Coast, and for many years in Dunedin and Wellington, died here yesterday afternoon, after a short illness. He leaves a family of two daughters and three sons.
SMASH WHILE CYCLING. Gisborne, August 22. Mr. Sinclair-3, Gisborne, manager for Messrs. Turnbtill and Jones, whilst cycling this morning, collided with a motorcar, had an arm broken, and ">was severely shaken. LITTLE GIRL INJURED. Gisborne, Augnset 23. Maud Bissell, aged nine years, was riding to school on a wagon, to which was attached another wa?on. She fell off. nnd a wheel of the following wagon passed over her head, killing her. SUDDEN DEATH.
