'I'heio lirttl been a heavy downpour overnight. Tho weather was bright, and the wicket wet. Resumption was delayed for forty-five minutes. Fit. Hearne, and Douglas each made a good stand. Inquiring 310 to win, the Australians made a sorry show against Dean and Woolley, a rot ensuing after the eeoond wicket fell. ' ' Tho attendoinco numbered 12,000, and England's victory caused great enthusiasm. When play was possiblo, Fry (17) and Hearno (2) faced Wliitty and Matthews. They added 27, to the overnight score bofore, a separation was effected. Hazlitt relieved Matthews at 01, and got Hearne at short-leg first ball, Five for 91. Douglas was the newcomer, and with his advent the best partnership of the innings ensiled.: Tho pair added 73 runs. The century was hoisted after 135 minutes' play. Macartney replaced Whitty at 101. Douglas missed a breakback from the lefthander that went just over tho wickets, four byes resulting. The batting was quiet, 15 runs being scored . in 30 minutes. Whitty replaced Hazlitt at 123, and Matthews Macartney at 127. Fry reached his 50 after 160 minutes' batting. Strong defence and judicious driving were features of his play. The score at lunch time was five for 150. On resuming, tho batsmen faced Whitty and Macartney. The latter beat Fry several times. At 167, Hazlitt bowled vice Whitty, and the change proved effective, the newcomer securing the remainder of the wickets. Fry was taken in the slips by Jennings. Six for 170. Fry had batted 220 minutes for his 79, which inoludcd eight d's. A collapse followed. Douglas was l.b.w. ten minutes later, alter a stubborn 'innings of 220 minutes. Seven for 171. Smith departed the third ball of tho same oyer. Eight for 171. Barnes was caught at mid-on by Whitty in Hazlitt's next over. Nine for 175. Dean was bowled first ball. ' The. innings lasted 260 minutes. Since replacing Whitty, Hazlitt had captured five for 1. - Kelleway and Jennings were the opening batsmen for Australia. Barnes and Dean bowled. A bad start was made. Kelleway was taken by Douglas at the fifth attempt, close in between point aud slip, off Dean. Ono for 0. Mncartney and Jennings made a plucky attempt to save tho situation, the partnership adding 4G. i Woolley replaced Barnes at 29, and got Jennings caught at cover in the third over. Two for 16. Then ensued a procession. Macartney, playing back to Dean, had his leg stump knocked back. Three for 47. Bardsley was run oiit before he had scored, HoJjbs throwing down hi's wicket from cover. Four for-47. Minnett hoisted 51, made in. 50 minutes, with a i off Woolley through the slips. Gregory was taken oloso in by Douglas off Dean. Fivo for 51. In the next over Minnett got l.b.w. to Woolley. Six for 51.' Smith did not add to the total, Douglas mating another catch oS Dean. Seven for 51. Three runs later Woolley bowled Whitty. ' Matthows and Hazlitt then looked like making a stand. Rhodes replaced Dean at 58. ( Seven runs later Hazlitt was caught off a "skier" at mid-on. Nine for G5.
