MERELY BANK GOSSIP.
CLUB AND OTHER HAPPENINGS. "Les" Campbell, the well-known Southern forward, has gone over to the League, and plays for Wellington against New 'South' Wales to-day. This is the second senior player who has gone over in about a fortnight. The other was Cook, of St. James. Bad tactics. Oriental backs were kicking for the line last Saturday during the spell in which the Athletic backs were "hard at it" shading the sun out of their eyes with, their hands. And yet they say that Eugby is improving. . Judging by a letter received from Wanganui (and published above) our old friend Jamns Tilyard seems to be "doing things" on tho banks of the "New Zealand Ehine." /'Results of the shield match at Auckland will be announced at intervals at Athletic Park during the course of this afternoon. Morrison, the ex-Alhambra. and Otago representative forward, who has been at Greymouth for some three or four EeaBons, is regarded as the best all-round forward on the Coast. \t was a fitting compliment to the Otago player that he Bhould .be elected captain of the West Coast team on its tour of the South Island. . By the way, it is repor'cd that Morrison proposes returning to Duncdin after the present tour is completed. A place-kick is sadly wanted in the Otago team, and if such a one could be unearthed he would be invaluable for the northern tour (says "Full-Back," in the "Witness"). Otago may not be allowed to cross their opponents' line more than half a dozen times during the game, and a ; player who conld kick penalty goals from any angle would justify the expenditure of his inclusion—even if otherwise he were the worst man on the Bide.
It has been definitely decided that the Australian team for America, will leavo Sydney on Saturday, September 7, by tho i Moana, and the Vancouver boat, reaching Sydney on December 21, an absence of 15 weeks. The forward journey will be made via Wellington, Earotonga, and Tahiti to San Francisco, and the return from Vancouver via Honolulu, Suva, ond Auckland, so that a different route will be taken eacn way.
A popular incident of the seven-a-side' tournament at Christchurch last week was tho "war cry , ' given by the College students at the' Old Boys, Lincoln College, and High School- successes,..and at the conclusion- of each series 'the"students' were accorded hearty applause. The Lincoln College . seven returned tho . compli- ■ inent .with a similar display, and it was decidedly unique to hear these cries car? ried.out.—"Weekly'Press." , '
