The Australian Steamship Owners' Federation, in a letter to Mr. Tuilur, Federal for Trades and Customs, points out that, provision in tho Naviga- 1 lion Bill, now before the House, will involve an extra outlay of ,£lll,OOO per annum for sliips now on the coast, and that in addition thereto ship-owners' liability for sick and injured seamen will be greatly augmented, and the carrying capacity of vessels largely reduced, oil account of the extra accommodation to ho provided for tho crews. The ship-owners state that they have no desire to oppose anything reasonable for the safety and comfort of the workers or tho travelling pnblie, but simply ask that vessels of whatever nationality engaged in the coasting trado shall comply with the provisions of the Act and pay the wages ruling on Australian vessel", so as to prevent unfair competition.
