MR. RIGG MOVS TO KILL THE BILL
' ; It was the general expectation when the ■ House of Representatives assembled yes—°v; terday that before it. rose speeches would ' bs delivered by Sir Joseph Ward and the 1 Hon. Jas. Allen. The sitting ended, however, without cither the member for Awarua or the Minister for Finance taking tho flopr. Tha first speaker in the Finance Debate, ■ ! which was resumed at 3.5 p.m., was Mr. J. H. Escott, member for Pnhiatua, who had moved the adjournment on the previous day. The debate was continued by i Mr. J. C. Thomson and Mr. H. J. 11. Okoy.' In the evening, Dr. A. K. ■ Newman dealt effectively with a great variety of ■ topics. He was followed by Mr. J. B. • Hine, member for Stratford, who made a vigorous fighting speech. Mr. T. 'W. Rhodes, who was the last speaker of the (lay, opened with an emphatic rebuttal of v the charge of pledge-breakiug levelled ; ■ against .him by the number for Avon, j.'i The adjournment was moved by Mr. G. R. -Sykcs, member for Masterlon, and tho ; . , House rose at J 1.80 p l .ill. . Tho Legislative Council yesterday re- '. sumed the debate on the Bill to introduce the olectiyo principle into the Council. ; The Hon. S. Thorne George seconded tho motion for the second reading, but hS was careful to explain that he did so only ■because he believed in the election ,of members of the Council. The Hon. 0. Samuel opposed the Bill, and the Hon. J. Rigg moved that the second reading should bo taken six months hence. The - Hon. George Jones followed, and at; a , quarter past 9 the Council adjourned till ' half past two this afternoon.
