MR. DIVE WITHDRAWS FROM THE CONTEST. (By Telegraph.—Pross AeSecia.lton.l Elthami August 22. Mr. Dive, one of tho Government candidates, has withdrawn unreservedly front the contest for tho Egmont scat. This was announced at a largo meeting of tho Reform League hold last night. This leaves only Mr. Wilkinson (Government) and Mr. Astbury (Opposition) in the field. Tlio Latter is a singlo-taicer. A question of which Mr. G. W. Rosso]l gave notico yesterday was received by Government members with hearty laughter. It was addressed to tho Prime Minister, anil ran as follows:—"Wliother, referring to his promise to a deputation, yesterday to visit the Egiuont electorate, accompanied by tho Minister for Public Works, at an early date, in connection with tho. route of the Opunako railway, as recommended by tho lato Royal Commission, he will consider tho desirability, in the interests of pure government, of holding over such visit until after the forthcoming election for that district P (Note.— I The railway, I loam, is a necessary one, and gives promise of being a sound investment.)"
