MR. MANDER REBUKES MR. ISITT.
■* Tlio House- of Representatives spent a placid afternoon, yesterday, most of the time being devoted to a discussion upon Borne of the replies made by Ministers to the- questions of members. Tho Gold . Duty Amendment Bill was introduced by Governor's Message, and read a first timo. Some discussion took place upon a petition from the inmates of the Koto 'lioa Inebriates' Home, asking that the regulations of the institution* shonld- bo altered. . The Minister for Justice announced his intention of personally visiting Roto Eoa and Pakatoa during the recess. An unusually varied selection of questions appeared on the Order Paper, but few of them' were discussed ot any length. Tho Financial debate was resumed at 5 p.m: The first speaker was Mr. J. A. Young, member for Waikato, who put forward a.strong plea in behalf of backblock settlers. Mr. Vigor Brown, member .for N.ipier, followed. He spoke for .about .three-quarters of an hour. Tho next speaker was Mr. F. Marnier (memter for Maralen), who devoted ten minutes to a dignjfied but pointed criticism of tho methods resorted to by tho member for. Christchurch North in his : speech on the previous evening. •'Mr. G. Witty, member , for Eiccarton, spent an hour in mn&ng a heated attack .on the Government • The last speaker was, Mr. H. M. Camp:bell, .'who rose at 11.20 p.m. and spoke for , ten minutes. ' . Mri;"Escott,' moved the adjournment of .'the debate.and the House rose at 11.35 p.m. ■■'; ■ , '■; In the Legislative Council tfie Hon. H. D. Bell moved the second reading of the •Legislative Council Elections Bill.
