O'Connor lias been appointed to act as starter for the Masterton Unciug Club. S. Reid is remaining in Christchurch to ride at the Amberley meeting on Thursday next. One of his mounts is the Dan-novirke-trained Goldfinch, who is engaged in both hack race.?. Jockeys S. Julian and J. Dcerey returned from the south yesterday and went on to Auckland by the Main Trunk express. The former is returning to Hastings almost immediately, in order to school I'aunus, vrhb is engaged in the Hack Hurdles at Marfan next month. A cable message was received at Riccarton during the course of last week, stating that C. Emerson, who is at present in Sydney, hud ridden seven winners ut one of tho smaller meetings in New South Wales. Mr. S. Pitt, a well-known Taranaki owner, who has been on u visit to Australia, returned to Wellington yesterday, and will leave for Stratford this morning. During his visit, Mr. Pitt took a run to Melbourne to seo the Australian Hurdle Race, and, in common with many others, ho thinks that AVimmera should have won. Mr. D. Buick, M.P., has leased his horses Kur.ipotangi and Papamarama to P. "W. Scalley, who, intends to prepare them for racing at Awapuni. A South Australian studmaster, who recently returned from England, rqnorts that Carbine is still looking robiist,- mul carrying his age remarkably well. He, however, is practically on tho .retired list, and his stud duties tiro very light. As a matter of fact,.he was credited with only one foal last season, according to a foaling return publisned in an English publication last mouth. In well-informed circles tho opinion is hold that, if Sir George Clifford is represented in the New Zealand Cup it will bo by Masterpiece, who has Tst. 13lb. to carry, and who, on Derby form, seems to have all the best of matters compared with other horses of his own age. America is not responsible for as many records as when racing was a live sport throughout that country, bnt occasionally something particularly good in tho way of the time-making is reported from there. The latest in that line is that at Salt Lake on July 8 a two-year-old named Floral, with Tst. 01 b. on his hack, won a four and a half furlongs race in 52 4-5500., which is claimed as equalling tho world's record nut up by Joe Morris (also a two-year-old) at Churchill Downs in IPO9. Kirrit'ihnir (Clnnranald —ifadowla), probably the best, filly ever seen in the Dominion, has recently foaled a filly to Sal Francisco (sire o£ Elevation, etc.). Recent foalings at the AVaikanao, Stud are:—Peace (The Officer—Content), bi f. to Hierarch; Success (The Officer—Content), c. to Achilles;, Lady Principal (The Officer—Tho Shrew), f. to Achilles; Prelude (Merrie England—Prologue), f. to Bezonian. The well-known jockey, Stanley ISiml, has taken service with trainer F. Higgott at Otaki. "W. Young, an erstwhile Otaki lad, has also joined • Higgott's stable.
Sylvanito, who was first and champion in the blood stallion clnss at (be Royal Slioiv in Sydney, has been imported to New, Zealand by Messrs, Iloult and Son, of Feilding. The, horse readied Wellington by the steamer Maunuainii yesterday morning. . On the turf, Sylvnuite had a successful career, winning tho V.A.T.C. Debutant Stakes, Hip A.J.C. Derby, and tho V.R.C. Derby, and running second in a number of'other important races. Ho 'hns already niado a name at the stud as the sire of Azurifco, Elvanite, Brittany, Sylvan Shoe, Precision, and other winners. His breeding is of the best. He is by that remarkably successful giro, Grafton (by Galopin trotn Maid Marion, by Hampton), from Gold Dust by .Niagara from Goldliko by Trenton, and traces back to Juliet (ancestress of JlartiniHenry, Cioldsborough, Xordenfeldt, etc.). The Wairaxapa Racing Club has been known under that name since 1890, when tlio amalgamation was effected of the. old Wairarapa Jockey Club ond the, Soiirli Wairai'apa Racing Club, tho latter having been in existence only u few years. Tho Wairarapa Jockey Club vras formed on April 21, 18G4, at a meeting held for that rmrp.pjo in Greytown. The. original membership list contained nineteen names, and the. club's first committee was composed of Messrs. W. It. Donald (chairmau), H. Bunny, W. Dorset. W. ]?, Hnstwell. T. Kenpton, jnnv., Wallace Smith, H. T. Spratt. and H. S. Wardell. The last-named genHomau, who died in Wellington a few months ago, was apnointed fecrctary and treasurer, and it is interesting to note that for the remainder of his lifetime, he was officially connected with tho club ond its offspring, the present Wairarapa Racing Club, being president <if tho lattor at the time of his death. The late Mr. Wardell had therefore held office on the club's executive for nearly fifty years, and throuauout the same period he had been one of the trustees of the lyinlierinikau Eaceconvfe. Another lons term of office was also completed by the late Mr. J. 1 , . I?'USscll, formerly of Wangaimoana (T.o«:er Valley), who was president from 1575 till 'hia death in lOOfi, when he was succeeded by the, late Mr. Wardell. Mr. AV. E. Bidivill, who has now been elected president, has beon a steward and vicepresident of the club continuously since 1890.
