Christchurch, August 20. ; "* The sequel to the West Coast coach accident at Paddy's Bend last New Hear s Day occurred tty© Supreme Court today, before Mr. Justice Deuniston, when three claims were made against ■ the owners of the coach (Moynihan and Co.). for damages in respect of injuries alleged ■to have been sustained by passengers through the accident. In the action: in question, Archibald Neil claimed JJSOO, Henry James Hopgood and Alice Hopgood 1 .£250, and Matilda Birloy .£5lO 10s. Mr. Alpers, with him Mr. Sargent, appeared ,for Noil and for the Hopgoods. Mr. Raymond, with him Mr. Johnston,.was counsel for Mrs. Birley; and Mr. Hannan, with him Mr. Cassidy, appeared for .Moynihan and Co._ Counsel intimated to •his Honour that it had been, decided to take all the cases together. Evidence was then taken in the cases, but had not been completed when the Court roso for the day. FRENCH PASS MYSTERY. Nelson, August 20. An inquest was held at Trench Pass today touching the death of. Hubert Brissendon, a member of the Terra. Nova, survey party, who was found drownwl on ■Monday. morning, having been missing since Saturday night. The hearing of evidence lasted till late to-night, and tha ■ coroner (Mr. Evans). returned a verdict that deceased was drowned on Saturday : night by falling into, the water whilo unconscious, he being rendored uncon- , scious either by the fall or by a blow. Thero was no evidence either how he received the injury or how' he got into the. water. The evidence showed that deceased was perfectly sober at the time. UNHAPPY HOME AND A TRAGEDY. Auckland, August 20. A'labourer, named Edward William Ryan, aged - 58 years, residing at Mount Baon, committed suicide to-day by shooting himself with a revolver. For somo. ; time past Ryan, who is a, cripple, has been unable to follow his employment, and- it is stated lived on bad terms with his wifo. This afternoon Mrs. Ryan had visited the Magistrate's Court to. make preliminary 'arrangements, for applying for a separation order against lior hus•band, and, in the meantime, he shot him'self. Canon Garland, of Brisbane, who is' to conduct a campaign in the : Dominion under the auspices of tho Bible- • in-Schoo!s League, Arrived in Christchurch this morning. His plan of campaign will bo decided upon to-morrow when ho confers with the Executive Committee of the League. EARTHCIUAKE.
