OBITUARY.

—; « ME. C. S. NIXON. The death occurred at nil early liout this morning, at his residence in Tinakori ltoad, of Mr, Charles Stafford -Nixon, Collector of Customs and Chief Inspector of the Customs Department. Mr. Nixon nod been in ill-health for somo time, and 1113 death was not unexpected. Tho lato Mr. Nixon joined the Customs service on July 1, 1872, and at; tho beginning of last month completed 40 years sorvico with tho Department*. Ho joined, at Westport, when lie was seventeen.years of 'age, having passed tho .Junior and • Senior Civil Service Examination, .after leaving Wanganui College, -where ho was educated. New regulations having come in the' examination prowl to Lo a very strenuous one, and only seven boys passed out. of eighty-seven. Mr. Nixon s eldest brother passed at the head of the list and Mr. Nixon himself came second. Alter remaining eighteen months at Westport, Mr. Nixon wis transferred to OreymoutH. where ho remained for five and a halt rears: From Greymoutli ho went to 111veroargill, whero ho remained for four and a half years. Having spent three yearsj at Lrttelton lie was tiansterrod to Now ilj- . mouth as Collector. hutecquently Mr. Nixon served for six rears 'as itinding surveyor in Dunedin, and an equal period at Timo.ru as Collector. His next station was Napier, where ho served as Collector for eighteen months. At the end of that period he was appointed Collector at Wellington. Two jwirs later lie was appointed Inspector to tho Department, and ho has been Collector of Customs at Wellington and Inspector of Customs for the Dominion up to the time of hi 6 retirement, a few days ago.
