Webster, 1 who leave shortly for Eliesmere, *were tendered a farewell "social", by tho citizens of Petone. After a concert pro- i gramme. Mr. J. W M'Ewan presented .Mr. and Mrs. Webster with a cabinet of table silver and cutlery, this being* the gift o£ the Potone people. Occasion was also taken by tho Mayor to present Mr. Webster ,(on behalf of the Borough Council) with ail illuminated certificate of service. _ / NEW THEATRE FOR HUTT. Mr. J. Babington, the popular proprietor of the Crown Pictures, of Lower Hutt, is about to build a new theatre on Wo•burn Read, Lower Hutt, nest to tho Central Hotel. Plans have been drawn by Mr. Keene. of Wellington. The newtheatre will bo built in brick and concrete, and will have a frontage of 45ft. and a depth ot' 124 ft. PRESENTATIONS. Mr. W. J. Gardner, who was recently appointed town clerk to the Petone Borough Council, will take over his new duties this morning. Mr. Gardner, who has been associated with the Hutt Borough Council as assistant town clerlr, was yesterday afternoon presented with a travelling bag from the members of the office, and the Hutt River Board staff. Mr. Purser made tho presentation. Mr. Gardner was also made the recipient of a gentleman's companion and silver inkstand from thp Hutt Council's employees. COURT CASE. Reserved judgment was given yesterday by Dr. M'Artlnir in the case, Barlow v. Isgley, in which a sum of ,£33 was claimed by plaintiff for drainage works carried out in the Lower Hutt. The plaintiffs had previously obtained ajudgment against Mr. E. L. Pawson, who was a transferor from the defendant. Tho transfer had been sot aside by an order of the Supreme Court.. The Magistrate decided that pTaintiifs were entitled to recover from tho defendant, and gavo judgment for tho full amount and costs. Mr. E. P. Bunny appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr. Cratroft Wilson for defendant. PETONE'S BATES. At next Monday's meeting of the Petono . Borough Council, the Mayor will move, pursuant to notice:—(l) That a general Tate of 2"-Bd. in the pound be levied for the general purchases of the borough, over all rateable property. (2) That a sperfal rate of 3-16 d. in t.h© pound be levied, for the payment of the annual interest and sinking fund on the drainage and street, improvements loans, and a special rate of 23-6 M. in the pound for the purpose of paying part interest and sinking fund on the part of borough consolidated loan of ■£2G,'.!00. (3) That a water-rate of 2\ per cent, on the annual rental value be levied over the rateablo property, where such property is supplied with wateT from the corporation mains, and a rate of 1J per cent, be charged on property not supplied with water, but within 100 yards of the water-mains. , MKS.
