The George. Junior Republics, which for the last fourteen years have been familiar institutions in America, are now being initiated in England, and at a farm in Dorsetshire the first has just been estabThe object of these- republics is to train as self-reliant citizens bo 3's and prls who would, otherwise be eent to rc:ormatories or industrial schools. The chief elements of tho system aro government by tho citizens in all matters •elating to tho republic itself, the laws )f tho little community being made by he citizens, based upon the laws of tho and, with full judicial and executive lowers (says tho "Queen"); and a. wage ystem which is supposed to bo commenurnte' with tho quality and amount of ho work performed. Out of this money ho inmate ynys for or contributes torards the cost of his or her maintenance. ?hus, with tho exception of the fact that hero is always appropriate work availble, these republics are an exact counteriart of tho world outside, and, as botli exes are included, it is a natural rather han an artificial community. In the Darsetshire experiment it is proosed to havo a currency of aluminium, ii which the citizens will be paid for heir labour,- and with which they will ay their rent and their board anil ptirhaso the necessary commodities and occaional luxuries.
