HOCKEY.

— « EEPRESENTATIVE MATCHES. Wellington is to he visited in a day OT ' two by . a representative team from the West Coast—the Bullor team hailing from Westport where hockey is said to be steadily in the ascendant. Some may/ doubt the wisdom of the Management Committee in pitting a junior representative ' team against the visitors, but on tho other hand, it would be hardly right to put the Shield-seekers in tho -field against them. They, aro to meet the junior representatives on Monday next, the Wellington Wednesday representatives on Tuesday, and on Thursday, August 29 the Wnirarapa representatives (tor tho Nordern Cup). Mr. J. C. Cusack has received a private letter from Mr. E. Pair, poTt, saying:—"Hockey hero is fairly, exciting as three teams are level in" tho lead. Yesterday (August 16) wo had a most exciting game, St. John's v. Post and Telegraph, and after a very fast and furious game a draw resulted—two goals each." Ha'wke's Bay representatives are to make an attempt to wrest the much-cov-eted Shield from Canterbury on September 7, at Christchurch. An effort is being mado to secure a match with the tourists on their way south, but owing to tho exigencies of time it is doubtful whether a game can be arranged. It would bo interesting to 6ee the result of ■ such a game in view of the fact that Wellington is to make a dash for the Shield next month. Ask for Warner's Rustproof Cprsete today. We carry, full stocks. City Drapers.* Mr. Jonas Whitley, of Bradford, died there recently at tho age of seventy-eight.. Ho began life as a wool-sorter in huinblo circumstances, but rose rapidly and amassed a largo-fortune in tho mohair trade. He was Mayor of Bradford in 1803. Mr. Whitley acquired the Hilton Manor Estate at Tarm, in the North Biding. Ho tjavo largely in a quiet way to needy fel-W-citizcns, and was much respected by all who knew him. Braunston Parish Church, near Leicester, was strewn with hay on Sunday, .Time 30. The Holmo meadow had been mown, and on the Saturday tho parish clerk scattered a load over tho church floor. Braunston is now tho only village that maintains this curious custom.
