Owing to Autuiunus and_ Counterfeit having been stopped in thoir work, Sir George Clifford has teen iqmpelled to abandon his intention of taking a team of horses across to Sydney for tho A..T.C. ■Spring meeting. , NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Bt Gw.ncoe.] At tho sale of J. Loughlin's horses in Melbourne, the Wairiki gelding Home Eule was purchased by E. A. Connolly for 275 guineas. ■ The South African.jockey, P. Gibbons, had several mounts at the C.J.C. meeting, but, generally epeaking, they wero not of much account. 'He did not succeed in attracting the attention of tho judge. ' After being, editor and eole proprietor of tho "Sporting Times" (T/mdon) for thirty-nine years, Mr. J. Corlett Bold that paper to a company last month. His principal reason for retiring as owner is that ho is not as young as he was, but ho intends contributing a signed article for the next couple of years, so as to bring his ' actual association with tho papor np to fifty years, Mr. Corlett, in preferring■•vto his publication; states that' a XS noto started it, and the capital , was never fully drawn upon, tho receipts being greater than' the expenditure from tho commencement. Mr. W. E. do WendFenton, who won the Two Thousand Guineas of 1905 with Vedas, is to be tho new editor. Mr. A. M. Wright, Iceseo of The Rover, was in town yesterday on business, and returns to Foxton this morning. Asked os to the late scratching of The Rover, he stated that, so>far, he had not heard that the C.J.C. required his attendance, but, if necessary, he would appear- before that body, and was confident that he would be able to give a satisfactory explanation of the matter. Last season Mr. H. J. Cameron, owner of Waterworks and Glenmore, and other horses, won .£ll3O in stakes. He bids fair to improve on this sum this season. At the O.J.C. meeting just closed he iron .£IOOO in stakes. Now Zealand-owned horses are figuring prominently in the betting market, on "futures" in Australia. Ermengarde Is third favourite for the Epsom Handicap. Her stable companion Bronze is at the top of. the quotations for the Metropolitan Handicap, and Royal Scotch occupies a like position for the Caulfield Cup, for which he is to bo prepared, by D. J. Price, . • ' The cabled, advice intimating that B. Deeley had won a. raco at Rcsehill, and that C. Emerson had ridden the runnerup, will be received with gratification here. This is Deelcy's first success on this trip, but Emerson has ridden other- winners. The Riccarton light-weight has been riding at the country meetings, and, at Richmond River on August 9, he was successful four timos. Telesraphic advice ' from Christchurch .yesterday stated that the Canterbury Jockey Club had refused to grant C. Price a rehearing in connection with tho twelve months' disqualification imposed upon him for jostling Paisano in the Grand National Hurdles. • "Inquirer" is .informed that, so far, no official time of the scratching of The Rover in the Grand -National Hurdles has been published, but it is generally understood that it took place a fow minutes before noon on August 15. A. Oliver will' probably leave for Sydney on. Friday, in connection with his engagement to. ride the Highden horses. Owing to a slight injury Bronze was an absentee from the track on August 10, I and was on tho easy list tho following days (says the Sydney "Roferee"). However, the trouble is not sufficiently serious to warrant her backers being at all .concerned. Owners nro reminded that nominations for the Wauganui Jockey Club's spring meeting close on Monday next. First forfeits for the Jackson Stakes, 1913, arc duo at the same time. Nominations for tho Dannevirko Racing Club's Steeplechase meeting close on Monday next at 9 p.m. Taiaha,' who went amiss while being prepared at Riccarton for the C.J.C. Grand National Meeting was brought back to Auckland by steamer on Thursday. On the journey up Taiaha contracted an attack of inflammation, to which ho succumbod on Saturday morning. Taiaha was owned by Mr. J.. Bunting, and trained by D. Moraghan. Ho was an aged gelding, , and his form over the big fences was most promising. At the recent 'Gisborno meeting he won a double, and ran second in both his engagements at tho Wellington Winter Meeting.—Auckland "Star.' ? FIXTURES. September 4—Marton J.C. Spring.
