ENGINE-DRIVERS AND WINDERS. PROPOSED UNION. Auckland, August 19, A meeting ras held at Huntly on' Sat unlay to discuss the formation of an engine-drivers' and winders' union. There were 40 persons present.. Tho presence of' Mr. Veil and, 11 member of "the, federation Executive, was objected to by tho convencr of the mwtin" but Mr. Velland was allowed to remain by permission of the Wailii delegates. The chairman spoke aganst the formation of a separato union in Huntly, There were no; TkOtter conditions in New Zealand than at Huntly. Alter much discussion the meeting ended, no resolution having been pa-ssed or progress made. PURE DEFIANCE. "CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR" FINED Hawera, August 19. In tho Magistrate's Cotirt to-day a Territorial named Garfield Oglo pleaded not guilty to failure to attend parade*. Defendant urged conscientious objections, but tho magistrato said that he was not satisfied that this was so, and therefore defendant did not appear to bo entitled to exemption. Defendant then staled that ho was not prepared to' attonil parades, pay a fino, or do anything, His counsel endeavoured to persuade him to reconsider that decision, but he was obdurate. Tho magistrate thereupon remarked that defendant's attitude was one 6f pure defianco of tho law, and fined, him £5, with costs 12s. BURDEN ON HOSPITALS. Hawcra, August 19. At tho Hawera Hospital Board meeting to-day a resolution was carried to the effect that tho attention of the Department bo called to cases of infectious diseases being landed in the Dominion, thereby constituting a burden on hospital boards. The board suggested that greater caro bo cxercised in tho inspec- ■ tion of passengers at the port of departure. CHARGE OF WOUNDING. Tlmaru, August 19, At Fairlie to-day, before Mr. V. G. Day, S.M., James Low is Baxter, licensee of tho Gladstone Hotel, was charged with wounding with intent to do bodily harm James Bradley. Bradley , a carpenter, was boarding at tho hotel, lus bedroom being in a detached building containing a number of bedrooms. Between 8 and 9 p.m. on August 7, Baxter went to tlio ootwgo and found his wifo in Bradley's bedroom, with the door locked. lie broko tho door open, and assaulted, Bradley in tho dark, stabbing him in tho leg and cutting one hand. Brndloy got under tho bed, and . Baxtor kicked him several times about tho fa.ee. Finally others came and interfered, and complainant got out of the window and went to a doctor. Ho swore that Mrs. Baxter was in his room quite innocently, but lie put out tho light, and Mrs. Baxtor locked the door when sh< heard her husband in the passago calling for help. Complainant made no statement to, tho polioe till last night. Accused reserved, his defence, and was committed for trial, bail being allowed in ,£l9O and a surety of .£IOO, which was at once forthcoming. DAIRY OUTPUTS AND PRICES. Dunedln, August 18. Mr. Soott, secretary of tho South Mand Dairy Association, reports a keen demand for both butter and cheese, and price! already, offered by buyers: are higher thai tho prices paid last season. Up'to;'l2Jd, f.o.b. has been offered for butter out puts, and up to OJd. f.u.b. for cheese out puts for the coming season. The factorial seem inclined to wait till next month, for no salo was yet reported; b.ut several largo cheese factories in tho North Island havo already decided to consign tJiii season. FIRES. Auckland, August 19. A houso in Grey Lvnn, owned and occu. pied by Mrs. Jano SlacDonald, was burned down this afternoon. Tho building m valued at .£459, but was only insured for .£2OO iu the South British. ' Duncdin, August 19. Last night, Messrs. Sharp and M'Nab'e drapory shop at Palmorston was totally destroyed by fire. The building was owned by trustees of tho estate of Robert Johnson. The insurance on tlie building is unknown. The contents were insured for JCoOO in tho Now- Zealand Office, but tho loss is estimated at .£SOO abovo that amount. Mr. Milligan's tailoring shop adjoining was scorched and damaged by water. , AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY SITE. ' Auckland, August 19. A deputation waited on the Minister fof i Education to-day and urged that the i Metropolitan Grounds .should not be i taken for tho University site, as they wer« i wanted as a reserve fbr tho public. Tho i Hon. J. Allen referred to the difference of opinion that existed regarding the site, and regretted it, as tho present University building was a disgrace to Auckland.
