DISEASED FRUIT, , -4 SHIPMENT OF MANDAKINS CONDEMNED. (Br Talecraph.—Special CorT'SSDondent.V ' Auckland, August 18. ' The ravages of tho maggot fa connection with imported fruit is still apparent. A {■hipraont of 30 cases of mandarins, which arrived by tho Malieno from Sydney last, Sunday was found to bo infected with the pest, and had to bo condemned and burned. This is the first shipment of Sydney mandarins to be condemned this reason., During the early portion of the Island fruit season importations of oranges are remarkably free from infection. : This is duo to tho fact that tho fruit nuipgot does not atitaek the frnit until it is properly matured, and tho firtt. Island shipments aro invariably picked before they have ripened. As the season proceeds, however, the fruit is exported in a much riper condition, and consequently it. often suffers from■ infection. The, same tiling occurs in connection with the mandarins brought from Sydney to New Zealand, otherwise the fruit is of splendid quality, and invariably meets with a Rood demand. An Island fruit merchant stated last evening tlmt practically All the mandarin? brought to Auck> land came from Sydney, and it was no new thing for (lie fruit to be condemned, especially towards the latter portion of the season. Fine mandarins, perhaps better than those prown in Sydney, were crown in Raintea and Ilnahine, two islands ill tho Society Group, which is under the Trench Hsir. These islands wore practienliv free from the pest, but as yetonly small (|iiaiililios of mandarins had been exported from them. Luckily enough, hn concluded, bnnnnts did not. suffer from the ravaaes of the pest, as they were invnrinblv exported in n very preen condition, and the maggot did not ntlnclc crecit fruit. Sometimes however, b linn mi? which hud been brolir.ii nv otheriris? damaged .lyeye found to be injected.
