PANAMA CANAL BILL.

HOSTILITY TO COMPROMISE. UNEXPECTED OPPOSITIONBy Telegraph—Press Assoelatdoni-Copyri'eht (Rec. August IS, 5.5 p.m.) Washington, August 18. Unexpected opposition has developed in the House of Representatives to tho Panama Canal Bill. Mr. J. H. Mooro led the debate, charging his confreres with adding unauthorised'matter to the Bill, namely, a provision allowing the frco entry of shipbuilding materials to tho United States. Ho urged that his confreres had no power in tho joint corffereuco between the Sonata and the Housp to add to the Bill an item not sanctioned in cither House. Tho House adjourned without arriving at a decision. The supporters of the compromise are chagrined, as they fully expected that tho measure, as approved at the conference of the two Houses, would pass with little further opposition. SENATE ADOPTS THE BILL, OPPONENTS SEEK DELAY, Washington, August 16. Tho Senate has adopted the conference's decision regarding the Panama Canal Bill, tho voting being 48 against 18. Senator Brandegee's fight against the compromiso was unavailing. The opponents of tho Bill, a3 it now stands, intend to endeavour to secure tho carrying over of the measure till December. Tho Democratic party, however, is expected to support the amended Bill.
