An arrival in port from Liverpool, via Auckland, yesterday was the F. and S. Line's steamer Essex. She berthed at the Queen's Wharf, No. 1 south, where 3COO tons of cargo will be landed. The Essex left Livcrrool on June 22 with 116 passengers and 9CCO tons of cargo aboard. Captain H. L. Brown (late of the Devon) is in command, and bis other officers are: Chief, Mr. R. Williams: second. Mr. W. Findlay; third, Mr. O. Snowball: fourth, Mr. J. Dixon.' Mr. R. Boyd is chief engineer. Mr. D. M'lvor f.crond, Mr. J. Sinclair third. Mr. W. Stanley is chief refrigerating engineer, and. Mr. J. Oates second, while Dr. Willi is ship's 6urgeon. Mr. J. Denford 1= chief steward, and Mrs. Taylor is stewardess. The Turakina was scheduled to leave Wellington Tor London, via way ports, on Thursday, August 22, but the mail steamer tlme-tablo has been upset on account of the strikes at Home. Captain Lippitt, of the steamer Ripple (not Messrs.. Richardson's vessel), trading amongst the inlands, arrived in Auckland by the Haurolo from Suva- on Tuesday morning last on a month's holiday leave. Captain Graham has taken charge of the Anchor Line's steamer Waimea. Mr. ft. Knvin is now third ofllcer of the Maori. Mr. L. Davis, third engineer of the Mokoin, left the vessel at Wellington on Saturday., U.S.S. COMPANY'S CHARTER FROM 'FRISCO. The Union SI earn Ship Company lias chartered the steamer Invcrio to load general cargo at Vancouver and San Francisco for Wellington, Lytlullon. Dtmedin, and Auckland. The Inveric, which is a steamer of 4789 tons, is owned by Andrew Weir and Co., of Glasgow. She will commence loading at Vancouver on October 10, and will leave San Francisco a fortnight later for Wellington direct, where she is due on November 50. WHAKARUA LEAVES XEW YORK. On Saturday tho coastal steamer Kapuni was taken off the Wellington Patent Slip. She sails for Wanganui to-day. The Kapiti comes off this afternoon, and the Queen of tho South will occupy the cradle to-morrow. It is expected that the Manaia (late Rotoiti) will leave Wellington for Auckland and Whnngarci either to-night or to-mor-row morning. At 1.30 a.m. yesterday the Maoriland Steamship Company's Enncrdale left Greymouth for Melbourne. Due at Wellington from southern ports to-morrow, the Flora will sail for New Plymouth, West-port, and Greymouth during the afternoon. Hauroto, s.s., is expected to leave Wellington for West port to-morrow afternoon. From the West Coast port she proceeds to Auckland, and tho Eastern Pacific Islands, leaving Auckland in nlacc of the Taluuo on Tuesday, August 27. With the balance of her cargo of Ta-s----mauiau timber the Kamona is due at wellington from Ilobart. via south, to-morrow. The vcsc-el leaves here for Wcstport on Wednesday. The Wellington-owned scow Ngaru is at present undergoing cleaning and painting on the slip at Helcnsville. She subsequently loads a. cargo of timber at Dargavilie for Whangarci. About August 22 the Melancsian Mission steamer Southern Cross wiU _ commenco loading at Auckland for Norfolk Island and Melanesia. She sails ou the outward voyage early in September. The American barqucntinc Makaweli,' after discharging her cargo of lumber at Duucdin, will go to Newcastle to load coal for San Francisco. This-week'the Union Company's Kowhai loads timber at Greymouth for Oamaru and Dunedin. At 1 a.m. on Saturday the Uuion Company's collier Waipori left Westport with Admiralty coal for Sydney.
