OXFORD CITY MILLENARY.
q PAGEANT OF A THOUSAND YEAKS OF HISTORY. The city of Oxford, on July 11, celebrated the KlOOtii anniversary of its first appearance in English history. , After a service.in the cathedral, there was a luncheon at tho Town Hall, followed by an oration in New College gardens in the shadow of tho old city walls. In the gardens of Worcester College a pageant was given, with episodes setting forth tho history of the city from 912 a.ij.—when the first definilo reference is made in tho chronicles—to tho present day. Sir A. T. Quillcr-Couch ("Q," the novelist) and Professor Oman wrote parts of tho pageant. One episode dealt with a perio;l before 912, illustrating the story of St.' Erideswide, round whoso shriuo tho present city has grown up. Then there was an opisodo of, tho earliest authentic record of Oxford's existenceQueen Ethelfleda handing the keys of the city to King Edward tho Elder in 912. "Father Thames'' opened the pageant with a prologue.
