MR. TAFT'S VETO.
OPEN WAR WITH CONGRESS. BILLS RE-PASSED-By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright Washington, August H. The House of Representatives, by 171 vo'tes to 80, favoured over-riding Sir. Tai't's veto of tho La toilette Wool Tariff Bill. ' Tho Speaker ruled that tho veto was over-ridden inasmuch as there was a two-thirds majority of those actually voting. Hitherto a two-thirds majority of the wholo House was considered necessary.
STEEL BILL VETOED. Washington, August 14. Mr. Taft vetoed tho Steel Bill on the ground that the measure did not afford protection to American industries, but was intended for revenue purposes only. Mr. Taft condemned the Ways and (Means Committee because the Committee refused public hearings before the passing of the Bill.
VETO AGAIN OVERRULED. (Rec. August 15, 11.30 p.m.) ■ Washington, August 15. Tho House of Eepresentatives has adopted tho Steel Tariff Bill over tho Presidential veto by 173 votes to 83. ARMY BILL TO BE VETOED. (Kec. August 16, 0.25 a.m.) Washington, August 15. The Senate has passed tho Army Appropriatton Bill replacing the Bill vetoed by Mr. Taft as a new Bill. The Bill omits the former provision dismissing General Wood as tho Chief of Staff.
Mr. Taft will veto the Bill in consequence of the fact that after the veto of the previous Bill the army services were left without funds.
The Scpato has passed a Cotton Bill. It is a democratic measure, with an amendment repealing Canadian reciprocity except as regards pulp and paper.
