Tho Tahiti berths at the Glasgow Wharf, and rails for San Francisco at 5 p.m. to-morrow.
WEEK'S SYDNEY BOAT. Shortly beforo 3 p.m. yesterday this week's boat from Sydney to Wellington— • the Maitai—arrived in port, and borlhcd at tho Queen's Wharf No. 1 north. The New South Wales port was loft at 1 p.m. • on Saturday, and fine weather and smooth se\is wore 'expci'icucod until Sunday evening. For tho following 24 hones the Jlaitai encountered strong, easterly winds and heavy eeas. On noaring Uio Now Zealand coas.t flie weather moderated, and on coming through Cook Strait fine clear weather and smooth seas were the rule. Imports by the Maitai were as follow:— 165 bales matting, 30 bags peanuts, 45 bags walnut?, 40 boxes crackers, 20 packages lysol, 17 bags almonds, 19 drams naphtha, 27 caecs ohocolate, CO bales poslboard, 50 bags clover seed, 147 packages tea, 900 cases candles, 160 cases schnapps, 20 drums paint, 30 cases Geneva, 110 rolls felt, 317 bags salt, 130 cases soap, 20 hogsheads crystals. ICO cases sugar, 28 cases "tobacco, 128 saci;:i ricemcal, 28 ingots tin, 220 bars lead, 163 pieces hardwood, and a largo quantity of sundries. In continuation of her journey to Melbourne, via. southern ports; the steamer leaves Wellington at 5 p.m. to-day, ' ESSEX DUE SUNDAY. Present anticipation is that tho F. and S. liner Essex will get away from Auckland for Wellington to-morrow. If this is accomplished the vessel should .arrive hero on Sunday, or at. least in time to make an early start with'discharge, on Monday. When her Wellington cargo, is all out, the Essex sails for southern ports to "finish." From tho Bluff she comes north to.Timam, and sails finally from that port for Avoniuouth, leaving on September 17. SIGHTED AT SEA. The officers of the Federal-Shire steamer Essex,, which arrived at Auckland on Sunday morning from Liverpool, report having sighted tho I'nion Company's new steamer Karninn on July 7. The Essex was then seven days' steam from Capo Town, and the Karainu was bound south under steam and sail. The Karainu is en route from Glasgow to Hobart and New Zealand ports. She was due at Ilobart on Saturday last, aid from there the proceeds to Geovcston to load a full cargo of timber for tho Huon Timber Company for New Zealand. , IMPROVEMENTS TO BLENHEIM BAR., As there were only 4ft. of water on the Wairati Bar on Tuesday, with very littlo prospect of there boing any moro for some time to come, the local agents for tho steamer Blenheim decided to pay tho crew off. This was done yesterday. Until such time ae she is able to negotiate the entrance the steamer will bo laid up at Blenheim. ' It is .understood'that the Blenheim Harbour Board have' comtncTnced a new channel through the. boulder bank. A similar work was undertaken by shipowners some years ago, and, tho scheme proved a workable ono until a "southerly" came up and blocked the entrance again. When this new "cut" has been completed, all that is needed is a fresh in the river to scour tho entrance. As there Iβ plenty of snow on the surrounding high lands at present, it is anticipated that the aecCESary flood will not be long in coming. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain Noville has transferred from the Moeraki to tho Moona,. His officers on the latter vessel are:—Mi , . J. Jauncy, chief; Mr. F. S. Sangster, second; and lir. J. K. Rne, third. Mr. R. J. Fowler, chief officer of tho ITaupiri, came ashore at Wellington yesterday on account of ill-health. Mr. C. M'Lood, late of tho Kaiapoi, has joined the Koonya as second officer. A. cable mossago stateo that Mio-Ti'ser iner Whrikarua was dispatched from New fork on August 6 for Australian and New Zealand ports. Attention has been drawn in the' columns of the "Sydney Daily Commercial and Shipping News'. , to the r.nusual charters tor the timber-Kirrying trade between ths Pacific Coast nnd Australia owing to tlie difficulty met in securing tonnage, but unusual as, the charters mentioned from tamo to time have been a still more remarkable decision has been arrived at through exactly tho fame reason. It ecem3 that the old wooden barque Hespor, at om tiiiic known in Sydney, but which htw been lying at Gray's Harbour fov throe years, is to be pressed into service. The vctf'cl, which 'has had a career Hie like or which is teldom heard of nowaday*, was built at Port Blakely by Mo.«r«. Hill Brothers in 1862. and since Mien ha- rnverl ull over the world. When laid up in 1909, owing to tho poor frcichts ofl'crinc the jailer. ?he was acquired by a Cnptain M'J)ona]d, who contemplated trading to l.he Sou in the lnnlwoud liiwincrs. intended fitting out ,an .expedition to pcarch 013 Coccs Tr-land. Two trips to the island, oif the Isthmus of Panama, were made, but without succor. Then the llcsper found liur way to Gray's Harbour, whoro slw has remained until freight rates, 1 coupled with the scarcity of tonnage, brought her into commission again i. According to a southern exchange, It.M.S. IHtrakiMa is likely to dock ait Port Chalmers this trip. After ..discharge of her cargo of Newcastle coal at Lyttclton, the Kaiapoi will proceed to Greymouth to load timber for Melbourne and Adelaide. Messrs. Bannal.yno and Co., loenJ agents, advi-e.thot the Wootton is due at Wellington from Timaru on Saturday. She pails on the same day for Nydia Ray.
