ATHLETIC SPORTS.

. . RUGBY. WELLINGTON & SOUTHLAND. PERFECT BACK PLAY. DELIGHTFUL GAME TO WATCH. The (wo thousand people who patronised Athletic Park yesterday afternoon were treated lo an almost ideal exhibition of back play. Tho teams engaged were the representatives of Southland and the representatives of Wellington. The opening spell concluded with Southland in the lead by (i points to 3 points. Southland did not score in the second half, but Wellington increased their total by 27 points. Tho Wellington backs were masters of tho situation, and handled tho ball with rare, precision. Tho whole, combination was excellent. Tho pace of Young and Grace, tho superb nodging and tide-stepping of E. Hyan, the cut-ting-in of Ramsden and M'Kenzie, and the usual good work of E. Roberts showed that Wellington has a formidable buck machine. Tho forwards, 100, were good. Unfortunately, in the first few minutes <if the game J. Ryan, tho well-known J'etono player and Weiliiigton representative, injured his ankle, and had to retire, Mr. W. J. Meredith was tho referee.

The Teams. Wellington-Full-back, J. Hyan; threequarters, T. 11. Grace, E. Hyan, W. Young; five-eighths, J. M'Keiizie and C. Kamsden; half, E. Roberts; wing-for-ward, J. Skinner; pack, W. Ready, U. A few minutes after tic opening of (he match J. Ryan retired because of an injury to his ankle. H. jM'Lcod went on, and tho rearrangement of (he (earn was that E. Ryan played full-back, Grace centre-thrcMimirier, and M'Lscd wing-three-quarfcr. Tho Southland forwards were playing hard and close, and keeping play_mi the Wellington side of halfway. Tho visitors were doing rather well out of marks, and from one . c-f thes.o M'Xeece kicked a fine goal from the centre of the. half-way line. Southland, 3; Wellington, 0. More play in Wellington's twenty-iivo ensued, but there was little of interest until half-way through the spell, when Southland scored again by means of a goal. Barry was tho kicker. Southland, G; Wellington, 0. I The Wellington backs made great ciTorts to break down tho Southland defence. Repeatedly the oval flow along t"he chain, without a mistake, froin E. Roberts (tho half) to ono of tho wing-three-quarters, but on almost every occasion the excellence of the Southland collaring kept them out. After more than a dozen Wellington attempts to ■score by means of back passing, .Young got over at tho corner. ■ Maciarlano's attempt to convert was a splendid one, but it failed. The spell ended: Southland, 6 points; Weir hugton, 3 points.

Second Half,—Wellington's Brilliancy. . -In the second half, M'Leod played fullLScfc,. E. Ryaii centre'-thrce-ciuarler, and '(iiaee wins-thrce-fiuarter. '- .. . ' Wellington- opened the' second spell by showing, the visitors the-quality of'their back division. TJieir first try fell to Ramsde;i, who scored from a short passins rush. Alacfarlane's kick failed. Southland, G; Wellington, C. A'few minute later the Wellington backs opened a passing att.ick from their own. twentylive. Tlio oval travelled from Roberts, iit half, to Grace at wing-three-quarter. By the time the 1 Southland twenty-live was reached, the visiting team had' beeh''air toiiten-, and (irace, sprinting well, outpaced his pursuer,*, and scored. JJacfarlane converted. Wellington, 11; Southland;' 6. E. Ryan was the next scorer. Ryan gave a delightful exhibition of sidestepping, . and scored under tho posts. Mapfarla.no goaled. Wellington, 10; Southland, C. 11. Patou. then got over from close play near the Southland goal. Wellington, 10; Southland, 6. Young's great pace was responsible for the next try, the fleet three-quarter, though nearly jambi'd on the line, streaking across at tlio corner. Wellington, 22; Southland, 6. Presently a passing rush on the other wing resulted in Grace racing over once more. Wellington, 25;. Southland, G. ■lust before tho conclusion of the game, I , !. Ryan battled over again, and, with a great kick from tho side-line, Macfarlane converted. The final scores, therefore, were: Wellington, 30 points; Southland, 6 points. ■ :
