TWO PRISONERS BOLT.
AT POINT HALSWELL. THE MEN STILL AT LARGE." ' Shortly after three o'clock ■ yesterday afternoon word was received at tho Lambton Pohco Station that two prisoners had escaped from tho prison camp at Point Ilalswell. . It appears that the actual escape was not noticed, but Warder Wood, who was in charge of tho prisoners, detected that, one ot tho men was missing from- the. work gang, and ordered a. return to the barracks, where a muster was hold, Un tho roll being called it was found that two mtn had apparently taken "French leave. .. .
Description of tho Men. One o£ theso was George Paul, alias Tunnell, alias Herbert Bartlett, who 1 had pleaded g-uilty at Kelson to two chareos of breaking and entering and theft. Tho oljcnccs consisted of breaking into two whares at Ireneh Pass and stealing vari. ous articles. -When ho appeared before the feupromo Court on August 5 last, Mr, f ■j> .Jackson, his .solicitor, urged on behalf of Ins client that tho charges were trifling, and that Paul was only 20 voora of ago.. lhe.ro was, however, a previous conviction. Tho lad appeared U) bo more siJly than criminal. . .
It appeared that Paul was at tho lime serving a sentence in connection with the oiteuee committed four years ago, as ho had only been recently apprehended. 11 is Honour imposed a sentence of three months imprisonment, to run concurrently with tho sentence, of a month at present bom? served. The. police description of Paul is as fol-lows:-Ago, 20 year.?-; height, sft. •I!in.: medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eye?, largo hooked nose, soar on tho middle finger of tho left hand, and another on tho face. i Tho other escapee, Andrew ' Borenrsen by name, was also Wore the Supremo Court on tho same date. Ho and his younger brother, Edwin Thorval Bcrwr-' ten, wero placed side by »ide in"'the'dockon a charge ihmhr to that oii which Paul was arraigned. Tho Bcreersen brothers had pleaded guilty at Hastings and it was urged in their defence that they w«ro very young and were both first offenders. . Tho elder one, Andrew, had made un liis mind to obtain a prohibition order on his own motion, as (to lift' Mated) it was drink- that had brought him ■ into trouble. Andrew Bergersen was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. According to tho police record ho is M years of age, height sft. SJin.; medium jimldj fair comploxian; light brown-hair; h f* b, ," e *}*«. 'Wi'h a sMi- on (ho pftliu ct tho left hand.
The Hue and Cry, As 6opn as the escapo became known j n ari ? us 1 ,01,c0 station!! were notified and the hue aud cry raised. The prisoners apparently bad not. escaped together I os Paul was working about, the barracks and Bergcrsen was out working with tho' gang. A preconceived plan of e«cano however, is more than likely. The hills around tho barracks are not verv thieklr covered with scrub, and in the "daylight it would be hard to escape detection unless the, 111*11 were lying under cover. It is assumed that the fugitives would either take cover until it became dark or would endeavour to steal round the rock*' at Lyaii Hay. A rumour suggested Hint ther lad escaped in a boat, but no boat bad been missed so far <ts was known la«t ovoifing. The police are keenius n thartv look-out on the hills, but early this morning, they had nothing to repoYt.
