The W'clJiygton Chamber of Commerce wrote, in connection with various railway matter*, and more particularly the speeding up of tlio morning ami evening trains between Palmerston and Wellington. The president i-aia the Minister for Railways (the Hon. Mr. Hemes) had' been interviewed, and these trains would us far as possible bo made more speedy.'-Tliei'o w as'considerable discussion on' the question "of "cl-y.3-illg Cook Street, to enable tlio Department to extend its yard accommodation, and on the motion 1 of the president it was resolved that, provided the Railway Department constructed a passenger subway under Cook Street, and gave <i siding into the .gasworks, no further. oTistaclo should bo piaced in the way. of tlio closing of the street, and that the Borough Council bo asked to rescind its resolution that a passenger subway be insisted upon. A motion, that in .the event of tlio Borough Council insisting upon a vehicular subway being constructed, a public meeting of ratepayers be called, wjis withdrawn. It was.staled that the Railway Department proposed to spend Mime .£30,000 on improvements to the station, but if the Borough Council persisted in requiring a vehicular subway, it would probably block'llie whole scheme. Viacent O'Neill ami Howard Webby, alloged assault and causing bodily harm; Tolico v. Hingawaka Tuparoa, alleged assault on a Maori girl; Police v. Charles Henry Smith, alleged sheep-stealing; and Police v.. Benjamin Kay, alleged carnally knowing. There is said to be a great scarcity of coal in -Palmerston, and dealers liave much difficulty in filling orders. . The Manawatu Rugby Football Union has a fairly extensive programme of representative matches to be played at Palmerston. On Saturday next tho Manawatu representatives will play Wanganui; on the 21st. against Nelson;"on the 21th, against Wairarapa; and on September 7, against Awnrua.
