SENSATIONAL INCIDENT.
EXPERIENCE OF S.S. BREEZE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.! Gisborne, August 13. A sensational incident took placo at tho rivor ontranee this morning, when tho Cantorbury S.S. Company's steamer Breczo narrowly oscaped sustaining serir ous damage. In consequenco of a heavy sea, tho water was very turbulent At the mouth of the river, and, just as the steamer was entering the channel at about 0.30 tO' come up to the wharf, tho steering gear jambed at a critical moment. The Breeze had a fairly good way on, and, when th 6 helm refused to act, she ran straight towards the groyne. Fortunately a big sea camo along and turned the Breeze round, otherwise she might have rammed the pier. A= it was, the port side of the bow grazed the end of the groyne, bending the ship's plate*, but not to any serious extent. The whole incident only lasted about, a minute until the steering gear was put lijjlit, but it caused some anxiety at the time.
