South Africa, was opened to-day at the' Oval in dull weather. Thpro wns an attendance of 3000. -..Tlio wicket was soft. When stumps wero drawn, both sides had completed their first inniiigs, the South Africans Laving made 95 runs and the Englishmen 170. _ i Tho teams wero as follow South Africa—H. W. Taylor, L. A. Strieker, L. J. Tancred, S. J. Snooke, A. G. Faulkner, A. D. Nourse, C. B. Llewellyn, G. C. White, It. Beaumont, S. T. Pegler, and T. Ward. I England's representatives.—J. H. Hobbs, W. It. I'iiodes, E. G. Hayes, C. IL Fry, If. H. Spooner, J. W. Hearne, S. F. Barnes, F. E. Woolley, F. K. Foster, J. W. Hitch, and E. J. Smith.Tancred won the toss and batted, ho and Taylor facing tho bowling of Foster and Bamos. A'bad start was made, Tancred being bowled in playing forward to tho fourth'ball of Barnes's over. One for 32. Nourse filled tho vacancy. Twenty was raised after half an hour's play, including II off one over of Foster's. At 31 Woolley replaced l'oster. Tho change proved ef- . fective, Nourse being out. l.b.w. to tho newcomer's 'third ball. Two for 31. Taylor was now 17. When % ho narrowly escaped being caught in the slips off Barnes. He was joined by Faulkner, who, when he had scored a single, was nearly caught in Woolley's second over. Wicketkeeper Hit. With tho score at 35, Smith (wicketkeeper) was hit on the mouth by a kicking ball from Barnes, and bad to rotrre. Play was stopped for ten minutes. Mead fielded as substitute, and Spooner kept wickets. Three runs were added, when Taylor fell a victim to Woolley in the letter's third over. He had batted fifty minute 3 for 23. Three for 38. . Strieker, who followed, made 5, and was then bowled by Barnes. Four for 47. Faulkner was now 3. Llewellyn came in, to see the 50 raised after seventy minutes' batting. The newcomer was caught by Rhodes at mid-on in the same over, tho batsman skying Woolley before ho had scored. Five for 50. • White, who succeeded Llewellyn, lost Faulkner three runs later—caught by Hayes off Barnes. Faulkner bad batted forty-five minutes for i) runs. Six for 53. Snoipko filled tho vacancy, and a better stand resulted, the newcomer doing most .V>f tho scoring. At 7G, White was clean bowled by Barnes, for 4. Seven for 76. Beaumont followed, and he and Snooks were together at tho luncheon adjournment—seven for 83. Wicket Difficult. There were 60Q0 people present when play was resumed. .The weathet was > gloomy, again kept wickets." •' 1 Snooke succumbed to Woolley's fourth ball, Foster taking a clever catch in the slips. He' had scored 6, when, at 95, Pegler was brilliantly caught by Hitch running at long on.

Tho South Africans put lip a poor performance, although Barnes's deliveries were kicking very awkwardly. Tho English fielding Ws smart. - No silly-point, jt was noticeable, was . played, although balls were frequently played uppishly in that direction. -. Fry sent in Rhodes and Hobbs to open for England. Pegler and Faulkner bowled. j Tho batsmen made a poor start, for with Hie ; score but 4, Rhodes played Faulkner on. One for.4. '■ Spooner followed, and a good stand ensued. When 6, Hobbs was ; nearly stumped . off I'egler. Spooner survived two appeals for l.b.w. to Faulkner when 5. Hobbs scored 10 off one over of Pegler's, and the latter was replaced ■by Llewellyn at 41. Fifty-two was hoisted in 40 minutes. Hobbs, with three, drives for i off Faulkner, Teached 30. playing brilliant cricket. With the score 65, Spooner was taken by Nourse at deep square-leg off LleweW lyn, having batted 40 minutes •for 26. Two for 65. Fry succeeded, but failed to reach double figures, the English captain-being taken at mid-off by Snooke, off Faulkner, after scoring 9. Three for 85. Hayes filled tl'o vacancy, and after getting 4, was bowled by Faulkner in attempting a drive.' Four for 89. Hobbs to tho Rescue. ' Woolley was next. Hobbs .reached 50 in 70 minutes. The Africans' total was : passed aftr-r 75 minutes' play. Three minutes later 103 was hoisted, and tho ] tea adjournment was taken with tho record four for 105. On resuming, Pegler and Faulkner occupied tho bowling creases. Willi his 6corc 55, Hobbs was beaten by Pegler. The latter shortly after got Woolley. Five for 111. Hearne, the next man, scored 3, and then saw Hobbs caught and bowled by Faulkner. Six for 127. Hobbs had played all-round bright cricket for GB, including eight. 4's. Ho had been at the wickets 110 minutes. ' Foster did not last long, being stumped by Ward off Faulkner after scoring 8. Seven for 135. Smith, who followed, mado, 9 in twenty minutes, and was then out to Faulkner. Eight for 163. Hearne, at this time, was 15. At 11 Tie narrowly escaped being run out. Barnes made 8 and was taken by Taylor at third man, off Faulkner. Nine for 176. Hitch, last man, lost Hearno in the next over. ; Tho innings lasted 150 minutes. Faulkner obtained a splendid average. The weather is cloudy this morning for tho resumption of play in' the Test match, but tho wicket is faster. South Africa has-'lost three wickets for 10 runs in their second innings. The details are: Tancred, c. Smith, b. Woolley 0 Taylor, 1.b.w., b. Barnes G' Strieker, c, Spooner, b. Barnes 0 AUSTRALIANS AT WORCESTER, A GOOD OPENING. London, August 12. Tho Australians began a match, against Worcester to-day. At stumps, the county side was dismissed for 113, whilo tho Australians had 113 up for tlio loss of two wickets. Tho teams were as follow:—Australia: Bardsley, Jennings, Gregory, Mayne, Hazlitt, Matthews, Whitty, Webster, Kelleway, and. Minnett. Worcester: Simpson-Hayward, H. K. Foster, E. E. Foster, G. N. Foster, Burns, Arnold, Bowley, Pearson, Burrows, Chester, and Cnffe. Tho weather at the opening of the match was line. Tho attendance numbered. 1500. The wicket was soft. Simpson-Hayward won the toss, and elected to bat. A poor start was made. Whitty, opening the attack, soon found a length, and disposed of Bowley with his fourth ball. The first ball of his next over proved fatal to H. K. Foster, whilo , the second scattered Burns'.? wickets. Meantime, .Minnett bad caught Arnold, off Hazlitt, and ! the record was four for 5. K. Foster, who got 20, showed good form on the leg side and in cutting. Pearson wns dismissed by a brilliant catch by Hazlitt, off Matthews, after batting one hundred minutes for 20 runs. Fifty went up in seventy-fivo minutes. . The weather after lunch was threatening. G. Foster gave a splendid all-round display, his 62 including eight 4's. Fifty was posted in sixtylive minutes, despite frequent changes of bowling. Separation came at 70, when Macartney was taken at tho wickets on the leg side. Two for 70. He had batted sixty-live minutes for 31. Bardsley and Kelleway played out time. The latter, at stumps, had scored 44 in two hours, giving a chanco at 13.
