HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho bi-monthly meeting of the Ixiwer Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, and was Attended by the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunnv), and Councillors llobbs, Ball, Roots) Clendon, Hodgins, and Knight. Messrs. Whitcombe and lombs wrote inquiring why their recent tendCT to rebind liiirarv books at 2s. 3d. had been discarded, seeing that the tender accepted was 2s. Gd. It was resolved to inform Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs that the tender accepted had been 2s. per book. Tho Hutt Park Committee forwarded reasons for giving a ten years' tenure 011 grazing in the park. The letter was received, some of the councillors objecting to the length of tenure. The Bank of New Zealand notified that as from August 1 tho rate of interest 011 advances would bo increased one-hall per cent., making the total 5$ per cent Tho lire Brigade Supply Company forwarded a cheque for i:SO for payment on the manual engine. Received. Mr. Doyle, lamplighter, asked for an increase of salary. An increase'of ss. per week was grauted. Messrs. Seaton and Slodden's plan of rofuls 011 section 25, Martin's subdivision,, was referred to the Works Committee. Payment was granted Firemen Boreland and Fleet for duty at a recent fire. . A letter was received from tho ITutt Firo Brigade, asking for certain information regarding the pressure of water during a series of previous fires. The information is to lie supplied. The engineer reported thnt better progress was being mado with the eastern drainage, section 5, the weather being finer. The report recommended that repairs should bo effected to Everest Creek ' culvert, at an estimated cost of X2O. There was also a necessity to kerb and channel eight'chains of footpath in Bridge Street, and this (together with metalling and constructing two sumps) would cost about .£4. Threo connections had been made with tho gas mains, and two with tho water riiains. The. total connections to date weire 922. Six hundred and seven drainage permits had been issued (o date undo* the drainage and sanitary by-law. The report was adopted, The Mayor then- moved to. levy'rates as follow:—General rate, 21 per cent.; interest,.! 1-10 per cent.; total, 3 3-5 per cent. Tho Mayor and Councillors Hodgins and Knight were authorised to sign the rate book. Councillor nodgins moved: That the ordinary meeting of the council be held on t)io second and.fourth Tuesday, instead of on the corresponding Monday. . The motiori waS lost 011 the voice*. In-a special report the eugineer detailed the arrangement made between the Firo Brigade and tho pumping-station in case of an outbreak of lire.—Received. Councillor Roots brought up the question of an .employee of the council who had met with an accident, and after recovery had applied for and received work that was not suitable. The Mayor pointed o.ut that there was only a certain amount of work in tho borough, and nothing could be done.
