In all three contests Wellington wero successful,. and tho hockey shown was of a high order. Their senior game wns.particularly full of incident, and interest nover flagged from first to last. On form, Wellington's chances _of success against Canterbury seom very bright.
THE CHIEF MATCH. Anticipation of a handsome victory by Wellington over. Tarauaki was justified when tneso two teams clashed on No. i ground, Llay's Hay. The lollowiiig were tile teams :— Wellington— Dwyer, Harty, M'Eldowney, Thompson, Campbell, Pnrton, Keed; C.StTaclc, G. Strack:, L>avics, and Loader. Tarauaki.—Stephens, Curtis (captain), Thomson, Sargent, Jl. Harris, Ligutfoot, Bennett, Sago, J. Harris, Priest, and Fiyer. At.3.30 p.m. tho ball was in motion, and Tarauaki entered the circle with a rush, but Dwyer relieved by kicking. Then Wellington assumed the aggressive, and Davies ran strongly, but piay was soon back again in the liomc team's 25. Here Lignttoot ran right down to M'Eldowncy, wno, however, sent tho ball back again. Loader next caught the eyo with a fine run and a grand "centre," but tho chance was lost, for Curtis intercepted, and Taranald in turn attacked. Their aggressivo eflort wnsol short duiation,.however, lor the home team soon rolled play back. Reed was ruled off-side, and the pressure relieved. C. Strack then came with a grand run. Right on into the circle, right past the opposition, and from a very awkward angle notched an almost impossible goal, which brought lorth hearty piaudits irom tho spectators. Wellington, 1; Taranaki, 0.
Taranaki now bestirred themselves, and weak piny by M'Eluowiioy let them into the circle, whero Priest, who was unmolested, sent in a stinging .shot. Ono all. On resuming, the pace of tho game at onoe quickened. Campbell set the ball moving, and away went tho Wellington forwards. From side to' side, hero and there, shot the ball, till Loader, with an alert stroke, whizzed it between the posts. Wellington, 2; Taranaki, 1. Tho home team wore now going strongly, and presently they entered the Taranaki 25, on tho right wing, and Reod centred smartly across to Loader, who, with a lightning stroko brought the Wellington's tally up to 3. From tho "bully G. Straok emerged, and with tho ball on his stick, eeled in and out, right into tho circle, but Thomson foiled him by hitting out. Reed was the next to shoot, but he was outside tho circle, and the shot, was disallowed. The home team now mado the pace even warmer. R. Thompson was playing a splendid game, and time after time ho eluded tho forwards. Presently he passed to Loader, who streaked down tho wing, into tho circle, and crack—a beautiful goal. Wellington,' -I—l. The Harris Bros, now boldly tried to stem tho tide, but the home team wero iiisatiablo, and, from a hard centre, O. Davies shot Wellington's fifth goal. Tho resumption of play saw; Georgo Strack run from half-way—a pure straight run—neither to right nor left, but directly, for the cirole. And, continuing his way, ho wound up with a meritorious goal. "Wellington, 6—l. Hulf-timo follow od.
Tho second spoil opened with Ires vim, and Taranaki scon entered the homo team's twenty-five, where M'Eldowney speculated and missed, and matters looked dangerous till Campbell intervened, knd whipped the ball out to liced. From him it travelled to Davies, who, cutting in smartly, sent in a warm and successful shot. Wellington, 7—l. Wellington kept at it, but G. Davies missed' three easy goals in quick time. Play slackened for a time, and then Wellington worked thoir way down gradually and from a scramble Loader registered the' eighth goal. The northerners now. attacked, and Wellington eased oil',. Their efforts were rewarded, for J. Harris 6ent in a shot which flew past Dwyer, making the tally Wellington, 8 goals; Taranaki, 2 goals. From now on play was fast and good to watch, but time was at hand, and the whistle went with tho total unaltered. Messrs. Gendall and Luckie were the rofcrees.
JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES. . Teams representing Wellington and Wairarapa juniors tried conclusions on No. 1 ground, where the homo team easily vanquished the visitors. The play was not bright, certainly nnt up to first-class junior form, for the visitors made several bad breaches—"sticks" in particular being very noticeable. Wellington won the "bully," and wont off right away. A free-hit to Wairaratfa relieved the situation, but the home team were soon at it again, and here M'Dougall (right-wing) sent in a good goal. I—o. Play then hovered about half-way for some time, but the homo team were nevertheless playing strongly. Occasionally the Wairarapa men got as far as the full■backs, but always they were driven back again. Eventually Wellington came right away, and Wobley finished off the effort with a good shot. Wellington, 2-0. Play in the second half was even poorer than had been the case in the first, but the snell was all Wellington's. The dcfenoe'of Spiers was splendid, and several times he came right down into the forwards. They soon shook themselves together again, and Webley sent in Wellington's fourth goal. Time was now Messrs. Gendall and Cookrell controlled tho game, THIRD GRADE REPRESENTATIVES. Third grade teams, representing Wellington and Wairarapa., met at Day's Bay No. 3 ground, which was very greasy, and, although the home team won tho match, the play was very even. The "form" shown was on the crude side. At half-time Wellington had a lead of two goals. Shortly after resuming, however, Wairarapa attacked with a will and equalised tho scores, but, just before , time, Wellington secured tic winning goal. LADIES' GAMES. College Old Girls A (1 goal) v.
