CROQUET.
9- " AN EFFORT THAT FAILED." '" (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Christchurch, August 11. A meeting of the Canterbury. Cromiet Association was held on Saturday. The president referred to a resolution that steps should be taken to arrange for a competition for the New Zealand croquet championship, nnd that, if practicable, this should be done through tho forma-' (ion of a New Zealand croquet association. He said that he made all necessary inquiries as to tho practicability of the proposals, and, ns a result, had found that, outside Canterbury, croquet organisation was in Biich a backward state that materials did not exist for the formation of a New Zealand croquet association on any satisfactory basis. It was therefore out of the question to start a New Zealand championship competition under tho control of such a body for a good many years to come. However, it was possible to hold a Dominion competition in conjunction wilh tho annual Christmas tournament of the Canterbury Association under the management of that body. It decided that, in all matches and tournaments in connection with the association during the coming season, tho setting should be that known as 'No. 2 sotting'' of "The Laws of Croquet," and that, so far as Canterbury events wero ooncerned, the internal width of the hoops should be four inches, but that, as regards New Zealand events in tho championship tournament, Iho width of hoops should be left to the Tournament Committee to determine. ,
