ARCHDIOCESE OF BIRMINGHAM. Tho Very Rev.'.Canon John Mclutyre, of Oscott College, has "teen appointed by the Holy Father Auxiliary to his Grace tho Archbishop of Birmingham, with the titlo of Bishop of Lamo. The nows of the appointment came as a complete surprise to Birmingham (says the "Catholic Times"), but it was heartily welcomed throughout tho Midland, Catholic world, where Canon Mclntyro is widely esteemed as a genial and popular personality und a preacher of groat. power and ability. When the present Archbishop of the province succeeded Dr. Ullathorno as Bishop of Birmingham in ISSS Canon Molntyre acted as the new Bishop's secretary. He was educated at St. Chad's Grammar School, Summer Hill, under the present Vicar-General of the diocese, Eight Ecv. Mgr. Provost O'Hanlon.' Ho afterwards proceeded to Douay, France, where so many English priests have been educated, and completed his ecclesiastical studies in Rome, obtaining while in the Eternal City his degree of Doctor of Theology. In tho year. ISS0 —tho year of his ordination to the priesthood—he' was appointed a professor on the teaching staff at Oscott College, where the Archbishop reside?, and continued in that position till 1881, when he undertook professorial work in the seminary at Olton for a year, and then returned for a year to Oscott. Doctor Mctntyre—as he was then known— returned work at Olton in ISBO, but at the end of twelve mouths was compelled to relinquish his teaching work, owing to a breakdown in his health, and for the next year, ISB7-8, hn was engaged in light duties at St. Benedict's Priory, Colwicli. Tho new Bishop is well known as a profound Scriptural scholar and has written several books on the Gospels, notably a commentary on the Gospel of St. John, whilo ho stands out us <ino of the most brilliant preachers in the archdioc.es:>.
