Nothing was saved. The furniture was insured in tho State Office for i 175, and the house in the South British for .£275. Mr. Cuff's lots is about •EIOO. OATH OF ALLEGIANCE. Christchurch, August 9. Sir. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., gave on important judgment-to-day in the case against, Charles Arnold Canipin, on u charge of having refuted to take the oath under the Defence Act. The magistrate said the oath tendered defendant differed materially from the oath of allegiance set out under Section 11 of the Act. Ho had not found an authority prescribing the oath by regulation or tor punishing the refuser. Tno Act was a penal one, and had to be construed strictly. Thv case was dismissed. .

HOTEL EMPLOYEES. Dunedin, August 0. The Hotel Employees' Conference concluded this morning. Auckland's remit, urging the extension of awards in country districts, was adopted, and the conference resolved to recomniead the affiliated u ions to take immediate steps in the direction of applying for au award in the' Otago and Wellington country districts. It was resolved to ask the co-operation' of the ■ Christchurch Union, which is not affiliated. Wellington was made the executive for the incoming term, and tin next conference will be held there. Delegates will wait o'n the Prime Minister in Wellington on Monday.- ' CHARLES RANGI'S DEATH. i XT t- Auckland, August 9. A Native named Charles Rangi was found drowned this niorniug in the VVaahi Creek/which runs into tho Wnikato Biver near Huntly.- As deceased was subject to fits, it is surmised that he jell into the water. Information concerning, the fatality was received this afternoon by Inspector Mitchell from the Huntly police. KAITANGATA TRUCKERS' STRIKE. _~ Dunedin, August 0. J. here was a strike of truckers at the Aaitangata mino to-day. Yesterday one truckor was dismissed because he had refused to work a , winch in tho lunch hour, and to-day the whole of the truckers for the morning shift (about lu) iu 'o on. Some of tho miners had to stop work owing to the action of tho .truckers. A meeting of the truckers, who all Belong to the Federation of Labour, was held this morning, , and it was believed that the afternoon shift will also refuse to work.
