LIFE ON ROTO ROA.

» SOME INMATES IN COURT. (By TolcEraph.-Proji Aejoelation.l Auckland, August 9. A charge of being guilty of insubordinate conduct was preferred- ngainst Wiu. Tierney, an inmate of tho Inebriates' Institution at Roto Roa Island, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., at tho Police Court. Mary and Bella M'lCcgney, two sisters of 38 and 42 years of age respectively, both inmates of the Pakatoa Institution, were charged with being guilty of violent, unruly, and destructive conduct. In tho case of tho accused Tierney, tho evidence showed that ho took advantage of a visit to the island by Dr. Monk to board the'doctor's launch. All efforts to induce him to disembark proved fruitless, and he was accordingly brought on to Auckland and handed over to the police. Evidence as to accused having boarded tho launch and having refused to go ashoro when ordered was given by Adjutant Haines, and corroborative evidence was given by Dr. Monk. Accused had asked witness to "give him in charge" when they reached Auckland, as he wished to have an opportunity of stating his case. Continuing, witness stated that accused had been m tho hospital, and had been operated upon for varicose veins, and his condition at tho present time was such that he should bo in a hospital. Witness hail recommended that the man should be discharged from tho institution. Tlio Magistrate: What are the arrangements in connection with sending patients from tho island to Auckland Hospital. Dr. Monk: I have no authority to send a patient from the island to tho Auckland Hospital except in cases of great urgency, Tho hospital at tho island has no proper nursing shift' and is more for minor injuries and complaints. Asked if ho had anything to say, accused said that his health was yery indifferent, and that ho had offered to go out on probation and report to the police every day. Ho had niado application for his release, and had received replies from tho Priino Minister and the Minister for Justice, but no reply from tho Undersecretary for Justice Department. In ordering accused to bo sent back to the island, the magistrate stated that ho could not' force- the hand of the authorities, nor could accused by insubordination. If given an opportunity, however, ho would mention. Dr. Monk's evidence to the Minister for Justice.

In tho cases of Bella Mivegnoy (admitted to Paltnroa Island on April 20. 1912) and Mary M'Kegney (admitted on December SO, 1911) eviilenco as to general demeanour of the two women was given by Adjutant Tillot. In the course of her evidence, witness stated that both.accused were (jreatly addicted to swearing, and tvlien in the room together would swear during almost tho whole of tho night. At this stago tho first accused averred that she would rather go to gaol for two years than return to the island. Continuing, witness stated ' that tho Army authorities were not able to punish unruly inmates. Up to the timo of tho present outbreak, Mary M'Kegney had behaved fairly well, and had done much for her sister, wlto was in bad health. Evidence was given by another Army officer as to tlw 'habits of the accused. When asked if she wished to ask witness any questions, Bella M'Kegney became slightly hysterical, and stated .that there was continual fighting on the island. Men would also visit Palcatoa at night, and bring liquor. Sho was eventually removed from the' court. Mary MTvegney deposed that her unruliness in the direction of using bad language had been caused by the fact that she had been upset through other inmates having their sentences commntal, while her application was-' disregarded.. She would rather go to gaol than return to the island. His Worship remarked that ho had no power to let accused finish her sentences in prifon. Both would bo remanded for a week.
