PETITIONS IN PROTEST. Petitions wove presented in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. E..Newman, M.P.. in which 205 ratepayers of Mart™ Mid G5 of the HuntarviUo town district ask for a reduction of the proposed rating area of the Waiigaiim Harbour Board. It is represented that tho Wonganni Harbour Board seeks, by means of an Empowering Act, to unfairly rate nearly tho whole of the loads within the county of Wangit'kci, together witli! the boroughs of Marton nnd Inihapo, and the town districts'of Huntcmllei ana Mangaweka, for further harbour works at Wanganui. The petitioners obscct to any of these areas bciug included for (lutoi , alia) tho following reasons:— ■ That the, paid harbour works cannot be constructed for tho sum of .£250.000 mentioned in the Bill which is boing promoted (vide Mr. Uolmes's report). It is extremely doubtful if the (mlmk bonr works, if undertaken, would be a success. , _ The chief port of tho country of Kans> tikoi and tho boroughs and town districts mentioned , is Wellington, where evorv facility exists for the clicmo and expeditious handling of cargo, nnd the Mtit-oww claim that they would net bo benefited by the proposed harbour works a, Tlie n co r im"v'of KangitiM and boroughs and town districts montioivod comprise more than one-third in area and rateable 'value of tho premised harbour rating disv trict and would,' in consequence, be heavily and wrongfully taxed.
