Mr. Fairniaid complained tliat some- of the Territorials were railed out on Sunday mornings for drill on the Ocean Beach at the battery. A special committee was set up to look into the matter. BURGLARY. Auckland, August C. Ferrand's store anil post office at To Hama was visited l>y burglars, who dynamited the safe and stole £110. Two nicn, named Maher .ind Hogan, have been arrested. ■ , HANDSOME DONATIONS. Dunodjn, August G. Mr. J. 11. Ritchie has donated .CIOOO to the Anglican general church fund, which is for the ]>enefit of the clergy in the poorer districts. / Dunedin, August G. A legacy of ,£250, bequeathed by the late Mrs. Does, of Timaru, has been received by the executive of the Presbyterian Orphanage. NEWSPAPER STAFF-STRIKE. Whangarei, August 6. Owing to serious difference between the staff and the manager, the whole of the employees of the ."Northern Advocate" have struck; consequently there is no issue of the paper, to-day. Publication will Ixi continued to-morrow, as the, mannger has accepted the terms of the ultimatum submitted by the staff. OLD RESIDENT'S DEATH. Carterton, .August fi. Mr. Joseph Oates, a very old resident of Carterton, died suddenly at Carterton last night. He was .yesterday doing business as usual, and was in high spirits. He had not been in ill-health. WAGONER KILLED. Carterton, August G. A man named George King, a driver for a carrying business, fell from the seat of a wagon on the Martinboiough Road yesterday, the wheel passing over his head and killing him instantly. AN INFANT'S DEATH. Auckland, August 6. A child four days old was found in a milk dish behind a washhouse at Henderson oil Sunday last. A nurse was procured, but the child died. An inquest will be necessary. A domestic.- servant has, it is stated, .made certain admissions in connection with the affair. COAL SHORTAGE. Auckland, August 6. Unusual shortage of coal in Auckland is attributed to the cold weatlior setting in earlier and being so severe. The- merchants find it difficult to meet the demands for household supplies. STRIKE PAY FUNDS. ■ - . ' Auckland, August G. The Auckland Drivers' Union, by a vote of 06 to 38, deleted from the minutes a resolution previously passed to pay £60 to the Waihi and Reefton strike funds, and circulated a subscription list among members inviting voluntary contributions, : TERRIBLE. FALL. Hamilton, August 5. Late (his afternoon a terrible accident occurred at the-water tower, which;the l''rankton Town- Board is-■'erecting-, ■'on FfanktOn Hill, when a young "man named Neil Kennedy.-.fell from', the scaffolding. An--ambulance was at once .sent to convey the injured man to the Hamilton Hospital, where he. arrived shortly after. H o'clock. It is understood that the unfortunate man was Working with another under the floor of .the tank, and in endeavouring to pass his mate slipped from . the scaffolding to the basement, a distance of 7li feet. When, admitted to the hospital Kennedy, was in an unconscious condition, rind his : injuries were so serioua that littlo hope was entertained for his recovery. He died a little time later. At the inquest, a verdict of accidental death was returned; no blame being attachable to anyone. The evidence showed that the scaffolding was safe to work on, and Kennedy must have slipped. WHALE-OIL CARGOES. Invercargill, August 5. The Norwegian whalers Hobart and Campbell were engaged at the Bluff today discharging their first consignment of whale-oil into the steamer Kaikoura. The vessels will return to the Stewart Island whaling grounds. CEMENT FOR PUBLIC WORKS. Dunedin, August 5. The Milbuni Lime and Cement Company has secured a contract for all cement required by the Public Works Department in Hawkc's Bay, Southland, and Otago for three years. NEW STEAMER: FIRST RUN, Dunedin, August 5. The new steamer Earnshaw,, which was built at Kingston by the OtagoToundrj Company, made an unofficial trial run, and did"; thirteen knots. NEGLIGENT DRIVER. Woodville, August 5. A man named Richard Stevens was today fined 405., with costs 1.15., for negligent driving. He drove over and hurt f child, and did not stop to see'what damago he had done. ■ ■ MEASLES ON WARSHIP. Napier, August 5.. Owing to an outbreak of German measles amongst the crew, H.M.S. Pioneer has cut her visit to Napier short, and left to-day for Lyttelton, where she goes into quarantine. DEATH AFTER SPARRING. Greymouth, August 5. A sudden death occurred yesterday. Several young men were training for the boxing tournament, when one of them, mimed W. Furness, aged eighteen years, after a preliminary spar, complained of being tired, and died in a few minutes. ■ TIMARU HARBOUFI MOLES. > Timaru, August 5. When the stenmer .Rqtorua was here the week before last persistent north-east-erly seas (not a common direction here) caused some trouble in holding her to the wharf. An active newspaper discussion is going on for and against adding 500 feel to the eastern mole as a remedy for such annoyance. The Harbour Board has requested the engineer to prepare plans and estimate for such an extension. RAILWAY APPEALS. • Dunedin, August 5. At a sitting of the Railway Officers' Institute to-day motions were carried to. the effect that the Ministerial power of veto in appeal cases should be abolished. Another resolution was that the council is strongly of opinion that the D 3 classification should not be abolished, and that any action to abolish it should be strenuous!} resisted.
