Ladies' Hockey Championship Tournament. A Press Association telegram from Christchurch, received last evening, states that tho decision of the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association to give the annual championship tournament tl is season to Christchurch is hailed with enthusiasm iu local ladies' hockey circles, and already active preparations are being made in readiness for the tonrnaaiijit. The matches will be played at Sydenham Park, and tho tournament wili run from September 7 to September 11. The lion, secretary of tho Canterbury Association was advised by :headquarters yesterday that eight associations at least will send teams, in addition to the two Canterbury teams, and possibly four other associations will bo represented. The tournament will bo conducted by the committee of the Canterbury Ladies' Hockey Association, assisted by representatives of clubs who are not already represented 011 the General Committee. A number of sectional committees are to bo set up to deal with different branches of the work involved, and <1 meeting to elect committees and define their work will be held on Satunlav night. Girls' Branch of the Victoria League. • At a. meeting of the Girls' branch of the Victoria League held last night prizes were awarded by Mrs. Atkins to Miss Davis, Miss Pearl Hamilton, and Miss Ina Gow, for the best essay upou "How to Manage a Husband if I had One." After the little ceremony was over, Robert Louis Stevenson's essay upon marriage was read. At the next meeting Mrs. J. Gray will read a paper 011 Dickens. Garrison Ball in Gisborne. Garrison ball, held in Gisborne 011 Ihursday evening, was ono of the largest, and most successful functions which have taken place, there. Tho Garrison Hall had been beautifully decorated for tho occasion, and excellent music was provided by the Gisborno City Band.
