THE REFORM BUDGET.
. TO BE PRESENTED TO-DAY, INCREASE IN GRADUATED LAND TAX. The Financial Statement is ready, and A'ill lie presented to the House this evenin". The Minister for Filuinco (tho Hon. Jas. Allen)' has endeavoured to facilitate in every possible way tho handling of tho Statement |)J' newspapers throughout the Dominion. Scaled copies of the Statement were sent away by steamer to the south last evening, addressed to postmasters, 'by-whom they will bo distributed in good tinie to Ijo prepared for printing on Wednesday morning. Efforts were made to get copies of the Statement away to the north yesterday by train, but the connection was missed by a fow minutes, and a motor dispaliched to Paekakariki failed to. overtake tho train. Tho Statement was therefore telegraphed to tho north last night, a precis being sent put for tho use of the smaller newspapers. In the Statement tho Government will indicate the directions in which Parliament wi)l be asked to legislate during the present session, and will specify those measures which it intends to put through before Parliament adjourns. ' - Details will be given of-tile more important reforms which aro intended to be dealt with. Some very important finan--cial reforms will bo proposed while it will be also indicated that tl)« Government in? tend to proceed with reform of the Legis? lativc Council, reform of the Public Service, and ]and reform, as indicated by the speeches of the Leader of the Keforin Party and his lieutenants prior to and since the General Election. An increase in the graduated land tax will be proposed, but the amount of the increase has not up-tp the present been, indicated, and still remains strictly a Cabinet secret.
