CANADIAN ON AUSTRALASIA.
FRANKLY DISAPPOINTED. (By Telcprraph.-Special Correspondent) Auckland, August 4. The Rev. Dr. Gordon, principal of the Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, was a passenger from Sydney by (lie Mαk\ira, en route to Vancouver. Hp has just concluded a. tour of New Siaith Wales nnd Queensland, in tiie course of which he has been a keen ok-ervor of affairs. Speaking of Australian railways, he said that he was very much disappointed. They we.ro slow, "badly organised with different gauges, and very uncomfortable. Before leaving Canada he had Ix'on a great advocate of public utilities being controlled by the State, but his impnssion of the State maiwgcment of many things in Australia had altered that view. AV.ith regard to immigration, ho stated that the Labour Governments had lio settled continuous policy, a:tid no rral desire to open their lyp-altlijy Jnnds. They wore hopeless in their mission cf Statecraft—a policy for .which they would eventually have to pay. In Canada tho groat railway companies advertised the beautins and wealth of the country, and thus assisted in the needful development, and it was imperative for Aus'trnlin f.o follow suit. In his opinion, par-ochinlism -was written i.'.i capitals all over'the country, The visitor was also .somewhat surprised at the nieagro amount of news concerning Canada in the Australian and New Zealand papers and vico versa in Canadian papers. Australians had tho use of the Pacilic cable, but it was ovident that it was wot used to its fullest for seven hours out of every 24. Why did tho Australasian Governments not insist on jretiinsr value for what they had to nay for? u'liat lie would lil«> to soo each day in Canadian .and Australian papers was a full crisp premutation of affairs of tho overseas Dominions. In dealing with compulsory service, Dr. Gordon said that ho felt that the system would hardly CMiic into vogue in Canada for many yrars but a movement w;is on fool. l<i conmieiifo fomothins akin to tho Now Zealand .lnnior Cadets. >
