WIRELESS AND THE TELEGRAPH.

AND BAD WEATHER. . / The recent spell of stormy weather played considerable' havoc with some of the telegraph lines iu tho.south,,and tho outlying repair gangs have' had a busy time restoring broken connections. In the not-far-distant future a serious "holdup" in, the telegraph services will not hav© nearly tho terrors that it has to-day, for those whose business depends on quick dispatch and for the telegraph offices whero the work piles up until the broken lines are. restored. The wireless telegraphy must beforo long be used more generally in commerce than is at present the ease. When thero aro stations at each of the centres in the Dominion, much of tho traffic in. storm-times, when there are breaks in the wire services, will of necessity bo sent by wireless by the business man with whom "time is money." Up to tho present tho wireless has not been utilised commercially in New Zealand to any great extent, but the fact that there will be at least eight steamers within call of Wellington to-day is significant of the possibilities of this service in the immediate future. At present, too, tho rates (lOd. per word) are rather high to permit of any great indulgence in the use of tho wireless, but with the popular use of the aerial means of communication tho public may look forward to cheaper rates in the future. Seers in America have already set down that tho day of the wire telegraphic and cable system. are numbered, and even extend their views to the time When wireless telephones will usurp the "tangle overhead," but this is still too. far ahead to even conjecture on anything like safe grounds.
