IN NEED OF FUNDS. A deputation from tho New Zealand Institute waited on tho Prime Minister yesterday morning to ask tho Government to do certain tilings to place tho institute on a nioro satisfactory footing. Present at the deputation were: Tho Hon. A. L Herdman, J.'Allen, Messrs. A. M. Myers, M.P., T. K. Sidey, M.P., G M Ihonison, M.P. A. Hamilton, B. C. Astou," and Professor Easterheld. Then the membership was 200, now it was 1100, and the hinds were found to be inadequate, with tho result that the institute finances showed a debit balance of J!3OD. Thev asked, also, that a special committee be Mt „ VP cous i<l«i' the establishment of a Scientific Board of Advice to tho Government, and the placing of the Museum under the control of a board of governors The Prime Minister said the Government fully realised that the institute was doing good and valuable work, and that it deserved assistance from the State, but unfortunately funds wore not plentiful. Ho would refer tho request for an increased grant to Cabinet. He could promise the deputation that the Special Committee would be set up.
