CIVIL AND MILITARY SERVICE. Mr. James. Sandbrook, who is retiring on compensation from the Public Service, in which he has held continuously positions of trust under every Ministry since the days of tho Fox-Vogel Government, has had a fairly eventful career. < Towards tho end of the year 1853, at tho Ago of 18 years, ho enrolled in tho Shropshire Militia', and after two years' service therein volunteered for activeservice in the Crimea, for which purpose ho enlisted in the 14th Regiment of the lino, which ho joined in Crimea with a draft from 1 tho Depot on August 6. 1855. He served in tho trenches, and took part in tho siege and fall d Scbastopol. On the evacuation of tho Crimea by tho allied armies he proceeded to Malta with tho headquarters of his regiment, and served there (ill April, 1858, when ho returned to Eiiglaml on transfer to the Second Battalion, then in course of formation, on tho augmentation of the nmiy. i Alter a couple of years' service in Ire* land, he arrived in New Zealand on September fl, 18fi0, in tho ffliip Boanerges, with the left wing of the Second Battalion (Mth Regiment), under command of Major Dwver, and served thoro till the coinmonomiont of tlwS withdrawal of tho Imperial troops from New Zealand, when, his corps removed U> Melbourne. In New Zealand ho served in tho Wniknto and YV'anganui campaigns. ' After completing fifteen years, servico in tho Army ho returned to Now Zealand in the year 1870, and joined the Armed Constabulary, at once Inking up tho duties of orderly to Sir .Donald M'Loau, the Defence Minister at the time, nnd he lias held a similar position under wmo member of every Ministry which has since been in office, when the Armed Constabulary was bonig reduced and reorganised in IS"" he was transferred to the Civil Service. . Mr. Snndbrock wears tho Crimean Modal (with clasp for Scbastopol), the Turkish-Crimean Medal, and the Now Zealand War Medal; and has entered upon the seventy-ninth year of his age.
