• —♦ — I RICK AH DS' VAUDEVILLE CO. The Rickards' Vaudevillo Company attracted a largo audience tn tho Opera House last evening. Tho quality of the artists readies a high general average, and the outstanding excellence of some of tho artists should servo to engender general satisfaction among lovers of vaudeville. Rinaldo, tho Wandering Violinist, is a veritable wizard with tho bow. The vitality and physical energy which he throws into his work is amazing, and its magnetism and charm never fails to appeal to tho sensibilities of his nudicnco. Will 11. Fox, with his pianos, his smart stories, and his polite gentility of demeanour, quickly establishes an intimacy which lasts throughout, his entertaining seance. His stories alono would see him through, without employing his heels and nose on the Steinway Grand. Blake and Granby, Walker and Sturm, tho Tossing Tcslros, Monio Mine, Melrose anil Monzies, Mr. Marshall Crosby, and the Bright Sisters all help a particularly good show along. PULLERS' PICTURES. A new and entertainingly varied programme of pictures was screened at the Skating Ring last evening*. - Among the best ot tho series there is a picturesque scenic subject, "Along the Simplon Road," in which there are presented to tho spectators tho magnificent grandeur of that rugged region of frowning precipices and towering peaks. "The Smugglers' Daughter <x Anglesey" is tho-subject of a stirring romance of tho adventurous period when illicit luggers evaded tho revenue cutters. "Dark Feathers' Strategy," as tho title implies, is nil India drama of tho Western Plains of America, displaying incidentally, some picturesque winter scenery. "Little Boy Blue" is - a pretty little romance in a rustic setting. "Won by Waiting," presents a study of hrinan perseverance prevailing over obstacles, disconcerting plots, and finally triumphing. Humour in ingenious association with ranch lifo in the Wild West, is amusingly presented in tho talo of "Alkali Ike's Boardinghouse," a screaming Essanny photo-comedy. Other good films include, tho Pa tho Gazette (an excellent budget), and "Spifkins's New Job" ( a broad farce).- Tho programme will be repeated this evening. THE -NEW THEATRE. Numbers had to'wait for admission last evening at MacMahon and Donnelly's pictures at tho New Theatre, Manners Street, every session being packed. The customary complete change ; is announced for . to-day anil to-niglit. Notable among the new series is tho American Biograph Company's sensational story, "A Lodging for the Night." It is a talo of a young novelist who goes to Mexico in quest of an inspiration for a new book. He experiences a unique adventure at a Mexican inn. "German Army Equestrians" is a fine exhibition of military horsemanship. Tho Cines drama, "Marion," and the Vitagraph drama, "At. Seroggins's Corner," aro studies from modern life. Tho Bison exclusive, dramo, "An Indian Martyr," is a very characteristic episode. Among tho comedies, "His Mother-in-Law" (Vitagraph), and "Oil For a Smoke" CHcpworth) are irresistibly laughable. Tlio' new programme will be shown from 11 a.m. till UVclock to-night. . A remarkable dramatic play, "The Brand of Shame," specially selected by Mr. . Charles MacMahon during his recent visit to .Sydney, is'advertised for next- Monday. . Tho star films include a very fine rural drama of sentiment and tender emotions, entitled "At Seroggins's Corner," "A Florentine Intrigue," a story of the tragic days of the medici and subtlo poisons. "The Lost Dog," an interesting story of a pet- dog. which falls through a fewer-trap, "A Woman's Way," setting forth the part which is played bv a true woman in a complicated tangle in human affairs, "The Agouti," showing a strange little animal in its native haunts, '•'The Pa the Gazette" (an interesting budget), and same admirable sceiies at Luoknow (India). The series will be repeated this evening, . " THE ADELPHI. The very tuneful Adelphi Masked Malo Quartet Party will again sing to-night. The number chosen this week is Dudlev Buck's delightful setting of "In Absence, 1 ' which, judging by tho work tho quartet have already done, should suit them admirably. Last evening tho picture programme was repeated, and was received with every mark of approval by a large "house." Humorous films largely predominate in this week's- programme, tho star film, "Matrimonial Squalls," being a comedy of a most laughablo description, whilst much amusement is caused at tho screening of "Tontolini as a Gamekeeper" and "Friscot's New Occupation." In tho latter picture tho nnfortunato Fj-iscot, whilst paying, court to a young lady, is mistaken for a chimney sweep, and' his consequent adventures prove highly diverting. Two stroug Western drnmas'aro supplied by "Tlio Trail of Gold" and "Tho Old Actor," . The usual prize matinee, is announced f&r to-morl'ow, when the, programme will be a special ouo for children. SHORTT'R PICTURES. "The Lesser Evil" was the title of the principal picture on the new programme at Sliortt's Continuous Picture Theatre yesterday. The plioto-piay is 'the work of the American Biograph Co., and is exceptionally good. A pretty girl is,in love with a young fisherman, but their affaire d'amour is interrupted by tho girl being kidnapped by a band of .smugglers, and taken away in an auxiliary cutfcr. Tho lover secures the services of a fast launch, and gives chase. Meanwhile things on the launch are not nil that they should be. . The crew, who have become intoxicated, attack the captain, because he has decided to protect the girl'from their unwelcome attentions. The captain presently finds that he has only ono bullet left, while tho maddened crc-w are Kinging at tho door of the cabin, endeavouring to gain admittance. At- tlie critical moment, however, tho launch arrives, and .the situation is saved. Quite a good drama is supplied by the Vitagraph Co. This is entitled "The Quaker Mother." A very pretty scenic film is a picture of (he waterfalls of Elfkarlo, in Sweden. The latest ctlifion of the Gaumant Graphic depicts (in ono portion) the proceedings at the first aerial Derby. The inspection by the King and Queen oT the veterans in Hydo Park is another scene, and the sr.orts at (fie Olymnia, in Washington, U.S.A., fiirnisliP": the subject of still another. "The Mad Woman of Penmnrch." "Winter in Finland." "Nnttv's Gamo" (comic), and "A Would-be. Star" (comic) are other pictures of the new programme.
