Sworn statements in connection with the police "graft" case declare that tho police collected 2,'100,000 dollars (.£480,000) from gambling houses annually in return for their protection. James Verella, tho proprietor of tho Dante Cafe, was shot dead this morning. Tho attaches at District-Attorney Whitman's °® CB believe that tho murder was due to revenge for tho betrayal of' an Italian, Frank Cirofco, who was a member of the automobile party which killed Hermann Rosenthal, the gambler, for whoso death,a police-lieutenant nn(l others are under arrest. William Lorenzo, a notorious gunman, and Albert Contento have been arrested for tho murder. Lorenzo is believed to have been delegated to murder Verella.
