ENGLAND V- AUSTRALIA. HOME TEAM MAKES 185 FOR SIX WICKETS. RHODES 92 NOT OUT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, July 29. The sixth Test Matclr between England and Australia, was begun at Manchester to-day, in boisterous weal her and on the softest of wickets. The teams aro as follow:— Australia: Jennings, Bardsley, Macartney, Gregory, Mayne, Matthews, Whitty, Hazlitt, Emery, Carkeek, and Kclleway. England: Fry, Hobbs, Rliodos, Spooner, Woolley, J. W. Hearne, Foster, Haigli, Hitch, and Smith. Fry won the toss batted, sending in Hobbs and Rhodes. Tho attendance numbered 5000, of whom 4407 paid for admission. Pliy was not started until 2.45 o'clock. Hazlitt and Whitty bowled. Tho ball bceamo greasy, and the bowlers requisitioned sawdust. Six overs produced but 8 .runs, the fielding being very smart. Twenty was posted in twenty-five minutes. Hobbs, after being in thirtysoven minutes for 19, was bowled by a break-back from Whitty. One for 37. Ho had played a skilful innings. Rhodes was now 12. Ho had beeu uneasy, mistiming badly. Before scoring he gave a chanco at point. Spooner, who camo next, played Whitty on in tho next over. Two for 39. Fry filled the vacancy. Macartney retired from tho field, M'Laron taking his place. Tho English captain . got 2 in twenty minutes.

A leg-bye sent up 50, made in sixty-five minutes.

Tho batsmen wero able to do nothing with Whitty, and made but small hits off Hazlitt. IColloway replaced the latter at GO. Fry, when 4, was nearly taken at short-leg by Whitty in Ivelleway's first over. Rhodes was steadily improving.

At 72 Matthews had replaced Whitty, and Fry got two fours off one over from Kelleway, and reached double figures in fifty minntes. Ho reached 19, when he was caught by M'Laren, at long-off, off Matthews. Three for 83.

Hearuo followed, and when he had made a single was badly missed by Whitty at mid-on in Matthews's next over. Hazlitt bowled vice Kellcway afc 89. Hearne kept up his wicket while Rhodes scored. Tho century was hoisted after 125 minutes' batting. Rhodes, who was batting more freely, had got 53 in one. hundred and thirty minutes. Emery replaced Matthews at 110. Rhodes was almost run out on two occasions, thanks to smart returns by Bardsley and Matthews. After being in fifty minutes for 9, Hcarno was "yorked" by Hazlitt. Rhodes was now 75. Four for 140. Tho Yorlcshiroman was playing enterprising cricket, i and lato cutting excellently. Woolley filled the vacancy. After 105 minutes' play, 150 was posted. Whitty replaced Emory at 151, and got Woolley caught at fine-leg for 13. Five for 155. Foster filled the vacancy. Matthews relieved Whitty at 173, and caught the newcomer off his own bowling. Six for 175. Foster, who also had made 13, was nearly, caught by Whitty at mid-on before ho had scored. Rhodes's score was now 88. He was playing very cautious cricket. With Smith ho played out timo. He had batted 220 minutes, giving ah admirable display. Only the ono chance is debited him—to Hazlitt off Whitty. Macartney's retirement was due to a chill. Details are as follow:~ ENGLAND.
