FIRE IN MELBOURNE.
— 9 CONSTABLES' AND PRISONERS' NARROW ESCAPE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. July 30, 9.55 p.m.) Melbourne, July 30. Messrs. Stone's timber yards at Fitzroy, covering three acres, have been destroyed by fire. The timber and machinery were valued at ,£20,000. Tho Titzroy Town Hall and a row of cottages across tho street were badly damaged, and the inmates escaped in night attire after several narrow escapes. The police headquarters were in the Town Hall, where a number of constables were keeping, and were caught by tbo fire. One was rescued in an unconscious condition. The prisoners in the cells had a hot time, hut were removed to safety.
