STRENUOUS TIMES IN MARL-. BOBOUGH. Tlio South Island telegraph lines north of Conway are reported clear. Interruptions extend for a distance of about twolvo miles between Conway and Wnirau. All available lino parties aro cmployed, and every assistance available is being utilised. Some idea of the difficulties experienced by telegraph officials 'in keeping the' lines clear in bad weather is given by the following message, which was forwarded yesterday by the postmaster at Kaikoura to the Chief Postmaster at Christchurch "Slip at Groeaburn, on Wairau Hoad. Our line party had to lower cftnvoyaiice with ropes yesterday. Mud up to tlio horses' collars, and two to four feet of snow along the road. Conditions are even worse south of Conway, thcro being five feet of suow on Whalesback. No possibility of coach getting through for a day or two. On Cheviot Road there is a very hig slip at Kahautia Bluff soveral chains wide, a hugo piece of rock completely blocking road, besides rivers being uncrossablo. There will be no chance of getting through for some time."
